Art, literature and society amidst the volcanoes and the sea of the Aeolian Islands
EOLIè — Festival of Art, Literature and Society is one of the most original cultural events in the Sicilian islands. It takes place every summer in Lipari, the main town of the Aeolian Islands in the Province of Messina, using an archipelago shaped by volcanoes, sea and history as its natural stage. Promoted and organized by the cultural association Un Sanpietrino, the festival brings together writers, artists, philosophers, musicians and scholars every year around a theme chosen to resonate with the identity of the location.
The sixth edition, scheduled from July 3 to 6, 2026, revolves around the theme «Abyss and Mystery»: not merely a literary metaphor, but a true methodological statement. To descend into the depths, to withdraw from the surface, to look at what is not revealed at first glance. The program weaves together meetings, performances, short residencies and works of art in a four-day format that combines the energy of a festival with the care typical of artistic residencies.
The heart of the event is the Norman-Benedictine Cloister of Lipari, a space that is both sacred and secular, flanked by other evocative locations on the island that become venues for exhibitions, readings, performances and installations. EOLIè asks artists to truly engage with the territory rather than simply exhibiting there: some works remain on the island even after the festival closes, extending its legacy.
The 2026 edition features British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, known for his underwater museums in the Caribbean and Mexico. For the Aeolian Islands, he has conceived a site-specific installation of underwater sculptures—his Italian debut—which visually translates the theme of the abyss. The festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Sicilian Region, in collaboration with major institutional partners.
EOLIè is an opportunity to experience Lipari and the Aeolian archipelago in a different light, far beyond just beach tourism: a journey through culture, landscape and reflection in one of the most fascinating natural settings in Sicily and the Mediterranean.
The 2026 edition of EOLIè, scheduled in Lipari from July 3 to 6, brings the theme «Abyss and Mystery» to the Aeolian Islands. The festival offers four days packed with meetings, performances, short residencies and artworks, with the Norman-Benedictine Cloister as the main venue. Among the announced protagonists, sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, creator of the world's first underwater museums, presents a site-specific underwater installation designed for the archipelago, marking his Italian debut. The full program, including other guests and schedules, is being finalized and published by the organization (Un Sanpietrino association) in the weeks leading up to the event.
Lipari is accessible by sea via hydrofoils and ferries from Milazzo (the nearest port, in the Province of Messina), as well as from Messina, Palermo, Naples and Reggio Calabria during the summer months. The reference airports are Catania or Palermo, followed by a transfer via Milazzo.
Events take place mainly in the Norman-Benedictine Cloister of Lipari and other locations in the historic center.
The full program, schedules and access details are available on the official website eolie.art and the festival's social media channels.
