A day entirely dedicated to water: the Casalecchio Lock, the canals, and the stories of Bolognese hydraulic engineering
There is a place, on the outskirts of Bologna, where water has been writing history for almost a thousand years: the Casalecchio Lock. Every year, on a late May day, the Consorzio Canali di Bologna opens it to the public with Effetto Blu โ The Festival of the Lock and Bologna's Canals, a widespread event that invites citizens and visitors to rediscover the hydraulic and historical heritage of the area through Renaissance walkways, river landscapes, and extraordinary engineering works.
The Casalecchio Lock is the oldest hydraulic work still in operation in Europe: for centuries, it has diverted the waters of the Reno River towards the Reno Canal, which feeds Bologna's canal network. Due to its historical and civil value, it has been recognized by UNESCO as a "messenger heritage of a culture of peace". Effetto Blu was created precisely to tell the story of this normally little-seen heritage and to open spaces and walkways that are inaccessible during the rest of the year.
The event takes place in multiple locations, from the heart of the Lock to the sluice gates that regulate water flow towards the center of Bologna. Among the main venues in recent editions: the Casalecchio Lock at Via Porrettana 187, the Casa delle Acque (House of Waters), the Casa dei Ghiacci (House of Ice), and the Paraporto Scaletta (Scaletta Sluice Gate). The common thread is always water, explored through cultural, environmental, educational, and convivial aspects.
Effetto Blu is part of the Bologna Estate program and is one of the most distinctive events of the Municipality of Casalecchio di Reno, in the Metropolitan City of Bologna. For the public of Emilia-Romagna and for tourists, it is the perfect opportunity to combine nature, history, and gastronomy in a single day, just a few minutes from the center of Bologna but immersed in the landscape of the Reno River.
For the 2026 edition, on Saturday, May 23, the Consorzio Canali di Bologna animated the Casalecchio Lock (Via Porrettana 187) and the Scaletta Sluice Gate (Via Scaletta 1, Bologna) from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The day combined the promotion of Bologna's hydraulic heritage, activities for families, music, and conviviality, with free entry to the area and some activities requiring booking.
Partners of the day: Autoctona Passione, Camporella Bologna, and wineries Gradizzolo and Lusvardi.
Main venue: Casalecchio Lock, Via Porrettana 187, Casalecchio di Reno (BO). Other venues in various editions: Casa delle Acque (Via Lido 15), Casa dei Ghiacci (Via Scaletta 1), and Paraporto Scaletta (Bologna).
Casalecchio di Reno is connected to Bologna by the Metropolitan Railway Service (Casalecchio Garibaldi and Casalecchio Palasport stations) and by numerous TPER bus lines. By car, take the Casalecchio di Reno exit from the ring road/highway. The Lock can also be reached on foot or by bike along the Reno River.
Free admission to the festival area. Some activities (guided tours of the Lock, workshops, Water Lily Ceremony) have limited capacity and require booking. Reservations: prenota.canalidibologna.it and email [email protected]; for tours of the sluice gates, prenotazioni.succedesoloabologna.it.
Wear comfortable shoes (some paths are on gravel along the embankment). In case of bad weather, some activities may be canceled: check for updates on the Consorzio Canali di Bologna website.
