Centuries-old Passion rites in the heart of the Caltanissetta area
In the heart of central Sicily, in Riesi, in the province of Caltanissetta, Holy Week represents the most heartfelt and well-attended event of the entire year. For eight days, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the town's streets turn into a grand open-air theater where popular faith and centuries-old tradition merge into emotionally charged rites. The Riesi community, with its confraternities and devotees, relives the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ step by step.
The spiritual heart of these celebrations is the Church of the Santissimo Crocifisso, known to the locals as "lu chianu Signuri", which houses the five ancient statues that are the protagonists of the rites. The statues are displayed the week before Palm Sunday: the opening of the church is traditionally announced by the firing of firecrackers in the late afternoon on Saturday, a signal that officially kicks off the popular devotion.
The Holy Week of Riesi is not just a religious appointment, but an authentic identity heritage of this town in the Caltanissetta area. The gestures, the chants, the gait of the bearers, and the choral participation of the locals make every rite a deeply engaging experience, capable of moving even the visitor arriving from outside. Included in the rich panorama of Sicilian Easter rites, the Riesi celebration preserves its authenticity and popular charm intact, offering the image of an inland Sicily still strongly tied to its spiritual and cultural roots.
The rites kicked off with Palm Sunday (March 29) and the blessing of olive branches, with the procession of the statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
Riesi is located in south-central Sicily, in the province of Caltanissetta. By car, it can be reached via the SS626 (Caltanissetta-Gela) taking the exit towards Riesi. The nearest train station for main connections is Caltanissetta; the reference airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about 100 km away.
The rites take place in the historic center of Riesi, with the epicenter in the Church of the Santissimo Crocifisso and the Basilica of Maria SS. della Catena. The celebrations wind along Corso Principe Umberto and Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
Free admission to all rites. For Good Friday, it is recommended to arrive well in advance, both for the dawn procession and the afternoon Scinnenza. Please wear clothing respectful of the religious nature of the event.
