Historical pageant, Scoppio del Carro, and flag-wavers in the heart of the Valdarno
Easter in Figline e Incisa Valdarno is one of the most cherished events in the Tuscan calendar. In the municipality of Figline e Incisa Valdarno, in the province of Florence, Easter Sunday transforms into a grand community celebration weaving together faith, history, and spectacle. The heart of the event is Piazza Marsilio Ficino, the city's traditional hub for Easter festivities, where a ritual that draws residents and visitors from across the region is renewed every year.
The stars of the show are the Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini, a historic group that has been representing Figline and the Valdarno in Italy and abroad for decades. On Easter morning, an evocative historical pageant of the Contrade winds through the town center, accompanied by local authorities, musicians, costumed figures, and drummers, heading toward the Collegiata di Santa Maria. In recent years, the procession has been enriched by the participation of costumed figures from the famous Partita a Scacchi di Marostica, with whom Figline has established a friendship pact, along with the Marostica standard-bearers.
Following the procession, the Easter mass is celebrated at the Collegiata di Santa Maria, attended by the costumed participants. After the service, the public gathers for the most anticipated and spectacular moment: the Scoppio del Carro (Explosion of the Cart). This pyrotechnic display, managed by Pirotecnica Soldi, honors the ancient Florentine tradition, filling the square with smoke, sparks, and applause. Afterward, the flag-wavers perform intricate choreographies with flags, drums, and acrobatic throws, providing one of the day's most beloved spectacles.
The event extends beyond Sunday: the program spans several days with photography exhibitions, activities in the square, rehearsals for the pageant, and the traditional opening of the giant Easter egg with a chocolate tasting offered to all citizens, organized by the Pro Loco Marsilio Ficino. Easter Monday is dedicated to discovering the city's heritage, with free guided tours of Villa Casagrande.
The Figline Easter is much more than a religious celebration: it is an occasion for the entire community of Figline e Incisa Valdarno to reconnect with its historical and folkloric roots. Promoted by the Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini with the patronage of the Municipality and the Tuscany Region, it involves numerous local organizations such as the Compagnia delle Contrade, the Pro Loco, and the Circolo Fotografico Arno, reflecting an event deeply rooted in the city's fabric.
The 2026 edition offered a rich three-day program, from April 4 to 6, dedicated to tradition and community participation. Saturday was devoted to preparatory and cultural activities, with the inauguration of the photography exhibition La Pasqua nel 60ยฐ and the opening of the giant Easter egg. Sunday featured the historical pageant with about 250 participants from Figline and Marostica, followed by mass at the Collegiata di Santa Maria, the Scoppio del Carro, and the choreographies of the flag-wavers. Easter Monday concluded the festival with a free guided tour of Villa Casagrande.
The heart of the event is Piazza Marsilio Ficino, in the historic center of Figline Valdarno (Municipality of Figline e Incisa Valdarno, Province of Florence). The mass and some of the celebrations take place in the Collegiata di Santa Maria.
