The itinerant sacred representation of the Nativity in Lizzano
The "E' nato povero" Living Nativity is one of the most cherished events of the Christmas season in Lizzano, a town in the province of Taranto, in the heart of the Salento region. Conceived and managed by the Pietre Vive aps association in collaboration with the Municipality of Lizzano, the event brings the birth of Jesus to life through a grand performance involving dozens of participants, primarily local children and their families.
The title "E' nato povero" (He was born poor) reflects the deep meaning of the initiative: to recount the birth of Christ within the simplicity and poverty of the Bethlehem stable. The performance unfolds as an itinerant route winding around Piazzale Convento and the Church of San Pasquale Baylon, where the public walks through scenes depicting the events before and after the Nativity. Along the path, workshops, ancient trades, and living tableaux recreate daily life in Palestine two millennia ago, leading up to the grotto with the Holy Family.
Pietre Vive began as a group of friends bound by values of solidarity and altruism, and since 2021, it has operated as a social promotion association registered in the RUNTS as a Third Sector Entity. Beyond the living nativity, the association is well-known in Lizzano and throughout Apulia for its Passion of Christ, a historic Lenten representation now in its fiftieth year, and for initiatives like the "Presepe in Casa" (Nativity at Home) competition. The living nativity represents the moment the entire community gathers to give shape, through carefully crafted costumes and handmade scenery, to a story that belongs to the town's collective memory.
Strolling through the scenes of the "E' nato povero" Living Nativity means immersing oneself in an atmosphere suspended in time, filled with soft lighting, crackling fires, and traditional scents and sounds. The event, free and open to all, is designed for families and children, who are the stars both on stage and among the audience. This living nativity is part of the rich tradition of Salento and Apulian nativity scenes, a cultural and religious heritage that brings dozens of villages to life between December and Epiphany.
The "E' nato povero" Living Nativity returned to Lizzano (Taranto) on January 3 and 4, 2026. The event opened to the public on Saturday, January 3, at 6:00 PM, and concluded on Sunday evening, January 4. The route wound around Piazzale Convento and the Church of San Pasquale Baylon, where costumed participants, mostly children, brought the Nativity scenes and ancient craft workshops to life. The event, organized by the Pietre Vive aps association with the Municipality of Lizzano, was free and open to all.
The Nativity scenes, interpreted by the children and families of Lizzano, unfold along the path among workshops, ancient trades, and living tableaux leading to the hut with the Holy Family.
