The road race between the Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo in Taranto
The Due Mari Run is the running event that brings the streets of Taranto, the capital of the Ionian province in Puglia, to life every spring. Its name reflects the city's unique geography, stretched between the Mar Grande and the Mar Piccolo, and the event's mission to lead athletes along an urban route that tells the story of Taranto: the seafront, the bridges, the historic districts, and areas usually closed to the public.
The race covers a distance of approximately 10 kilometres, with the start and finish lines located in the city centre. Depending on the edition, the route touches on various evocative locations: from the seafront to the swing bridge, and from the Old Town to areas normally inaccessible, such as the Military Arsenal and the SVAM (Air Force Aircraft Station), which are exceptionally opened to runners for the occasion. It is a challenging course, with some inclines and changes in elevation, which is precisely why it is so highly regarded by competitive athletes.
The Due Mari Run is more than just a competition: it is a key date in the city's Ecological Sunday calendar, featuring sports activities across the central squares and a community cycle ride. The event also has a strong charitable focus, with a portion of the registration fees donated to local social welfare organisations.
Though only a few years old, the race has quickly captured the hearts of Taranto locals and Apulian runners alike, becoming a fixture on regional and provincial circuits. With around a thousand registered participants per edition, the Due Mari Run is now one of the most popular road races in the Province of Taranto and a moment for the city to rediscover itself through sport.
The third edition of the Due Mari Run took place on Sunday, April 12, 2026, confirming the great popularity of the Taranto event. The race was presented to the city in the days leading up to it and attracted about a thousand participants, including both competitive and amateur runners.
The course, starting and finishing in Piazza Maria Immacolata, featured a challenging 9.5-10 km route with several inclines and changes in elevation, passing through the military areas of the Arsenal and the SVAM, which were exceptionally opened to runners. The event was valid for the Grand Prix Terra Jonica and was held within the framework of the city's Ecological Sunday.
Men's victory went to Daniel David and women's to Mariangela Ceglia. About a thousand athletes at the start from Piazza Maria Immacolata and exceptional opening of the military areas of the Arsenal and the SVAM.
