Folklore, legends, and traditions in the heart of the Saint George feast
In the heart of the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola region, where the woods of the Cusio area meet the slopes of Mottarone, the town of Casale Corte Cerro hosts an event that combines hiking, culture, and magic: the Dragon Walk. The initiative was born as part of the "Scopriamo Girolago" project, a series of guided walks promoted by the Lake Orta and Mottarone Ecomuseum (Ecomuseo Cusius), which for over twenty years has invited visitors to rediscover the paths, villages, and traditions surrounding Lake Orta.
The event is inextricably linked to the patronal feast of Saint George, the saint to whom the town's medieval parish church is dedicated. The legend of Saint George and the dragon, which spread primarily during the Middle Ages, becomes the common thread of a day that blends hiking and storytelling. Participants, guided along the route, discover the symbolism of dragons, snakes, and basilisks, and how these creatures have populated the region's popular imagination.
A central stop on the walk is the Latteria Turnaria Museum in Casale Corte Cerro, housed in the historic building of the Cooperative Dairy, founded in 1872 to collect and process milk produced by the members' farms. The guided tour allows visitors to immerse themselves in the material and rural culture of the Cusio area, a living testimony to a way of living and working in the mountains.
The Dragon Walk is designed for families and curious visitors of all ages: alongside cultural insights, there are more playful moments, such as the dragon workshop reserved for children and the preparation of traditional elderflower cookies, which, according to local custom, are exchanged during the feast of Saint George. It is a way to pass down the rituals and flavors that belong to the community of Casale Corte Cerro and the entire Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province in Piedmont.
