Stars, galaxies, and 360° immersive projections under the inflatable dome in Piazza Garibaldi
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
For two days, Piazza Garibaldi, the open-air living room of Buonalbergo, transforms into a gateway to the universe. At the center of the public square stands the inflatable dome of the Discovery Mobile Planetarium, a traveling structure that tours Italy, bringing astronomy to the squares, schools, and parks of smaller towns. The initiative is promoted by the Pro Loco Buonalbergo APS and is part of a calendar of events that, in this town of just over 1,400 inhabitants in the province of Benevento, Campania, aims to blend education, social life, and local promotion.
Discovery is an educational and scientific project with high emotional impact, built on modern digital computer graphics and "immersive" projection techniques. Within the spacious dome, spectators experience a projection that surrounds them 360°: there is no front screen, but rather a sky that opens up above and all around, creating engagement on multiple levels—scientific, educational, and experiential.
The journey is a visual narrative: stars, galaxies, and cosmic phenomena are shown through immersive documentaries that, in just a few minutes, shift the viewer's gaze from the town square to the edges of the solar system and beyond.
The mobile planetarium formula works perfectly in the villages of the Campanian Apennines: it doesn't require traveling to a large urban center, but arrives directly where the community already gathers. The result is a diverse audience, where local school children sit alongside their parents and grandparents. For many, it is their first time under a starry dome, and the square—usually the stage for food festivals and patronal feasts—takes on the role of a small center for scientific outreach for a weekend.
The total accessibility of the structure is one of the key elements highlighted by the organizers: the dome can be visited by the elderly or those with reduced mobility, a condition not always guaranteed by temporary setups.
Buonalbergo stretches at about 555 meters above sea level on the hills separating Sannio from Irpinia, bordering Casalbore, Montecalvo Irpino, Paduli, Apice, San Giorgio La Molara, and Sant'Arcangelo Trimonte. Its name is thought to derive from the Latin bonus combined with the Lombard haripergo, meaning "shelter": a toponym that speaks to its history as a stopover. The Via Appia Traiana passed through here, and the territory still preserves archaeological traces and a Roman bridge with three original arches; in July 2025, the town inaugurated ViATor, a museum dedicated to this ancient route. Watching the stars in a square crossed for centuries by travelers of the Appia Traiana adds an unexpected resonance to the event.
Visitors arriving in Buonalbergo for the planetarium will find a town with a vibrant community life, supported by the Pro Loco. The main annual events include the Sagra de lo Ciammarruchiello, dedicated to snails and traditionally held on August 13th and 14th in Piazza Garibaldi, and the EtnoFestival "Musiche dal Mondo", scheduled for July 24th and 25th, 2026, at Cascina Panari. In autumn, the "Piazze della Lumaca" initiative has also been added. The patronal feast is dedicated to the Santissima Madonna della Macchia and falls on September 12th.
The last documented edition of the traveling planetarium in Buonalbergo took place in October 2025. At the moment, no official date has been published for 2026: the event is considered recurring, but confirmation depends on the scheduling of the Pro Loco and the calendar of the operator managing the mobile dome. Those who want to be sure of the dates can follow the association's social media channels or contact them directly, as announcements are usually made just a few weeks before the event.
The inflatable dome of the Discovery mobile planetarium is expected back in Buonalbergo, in the province of Benevento, but no dates have been announced for 2026. The reference remains the previous edition, hosted in Piazza Garibaldi in October.
When the event is confirmed, the format is expected to remain the same: rotating sessions for a maximum of 30 spectators each, 360° immersive projections dedicated to stars, galaxies, and cosmic phenomena, and a climate-controlled structure accessible to those with mobility issues. For dates, times, and any entry fees, it is best to contact the Pro Loco Buonalbergo APS directly, as they have released announcements a few weeks in advance via their website and social media channels in recent years.
Buonalbergo can be reached by car via the SS 90 bis, which connects Benevento to Ariano Irpino and Foggia. From the provincial capital, the journey takes about half an hour. The planetarium is set up in Piazza Garibaldi, in the town center, where free parking is available along the adjacent streets.
The dome is certified as barrier-free and accessible to people with mobility difficulties. Each session accommodates a maximum of 30 spectators, so during peak times, you may need to wait for the next turn.
