The three-oar boat regatta on the waters of Martinsicuro
The Dionisi Memorial — Historical Three-Oar Boat Regatta is one of the most cherished events on the coast of Martinsicuro, in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo. Every summer, in the waters facing the Riva Nuova Camping Village, crews compete aboard traditional three-oar boats, faithful replicas of the ancient vessels used by the local Truentum fishermen. More than just a sporting competition, the regatta is a collective ritual that reconnects the community with its maritime roots.
The heart of the event is the Truentina rowing style, a technique passed down by fishermen from the mouth of the Tronto river, the ancient Truentum. Each boat is powered by three rowers: two at the bow and one at the stern who also acts as the helmsman. The crews represent the historic districts of Martinsicuro and Villa Rosa, battling it out until the final stroke in intense, exciting races. Among the star vessels is the historic Nuova Rosa, a symbol of the local rowing tradition.
The event, named in memory of the Dionisi family, is organized by the A.R.M. — Martinsicuro Rowers Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Martinsicuro and with the involvement of the family itself. The day blends tradition, sport, and fun: locals, enthusiasts, and tourists gather along the beach to cheer for their crews in a festive atmosphere that culminates with the awards ceremony on the sand.
The regatta is part of the events promoted under the 2026 European Community of Sport, a recognition awarded to the Union of Val Vibrata Municipalities, which brings together twelve towns in the Teramo area from the sea to the mountains. In this context, the Dionisi Memorial highlights the Adriatic maritime heritage and represents a fundamental piece of history for the identity of the Truentina citizens.
A free event open to everyone, capturing the maritime soul of Martinsicuro and the Val Vibrata in a single morning.
