The village festival of Decontra, blending popular faith, music, and the flavors of Abruzzo
In the heart of the Val Pescara, just a few kilometers from the municipal center, the village of Decontra di Scafa (Province of Pescara, Abruzzo) celebrates its Patronal Feast every June in honor of Saint Anthony and Saint Francis. For a small hamlet of fewer than five hundred residents, nestled at 168 meters above sea level in the hills rising toward the Majella mountains, these days are the most anticipated event of the year: a time when the community reconnects, families return home, and doors are opened to visitors from neighboring towns.
As with many patronal feasts in Abruzzo, the heart of the event lies in its religious dimension. The days are marked by celebrations dedicated to the patron saints, moments of prayer, and a procession that winds through the village streets, accompanied by the local residents. It is a tradition passed down through generations, weaving popular devotion with a deep sense of local belonging.
Alongside the sacred aspects, the festival features a vibrant secular program. The stage set up in Piazza Di Paolo Rosario hosts live concerts, musical evenings, and entertainment for all ages, with free admission. There is no shortage of food stalls, where you can sample typical Abruzzese cuisine and local products, including arrosticini, village specialties, and traditional desserts.
The Decontra Patronal Feast is an authentic example of how, in the villages of the Pescara hinterland, the patron saint's festival remains the glue that holds the entire community together. Visitors will find a simple and sincere welcome, the chance to discover a village off the beaten path of mass tourism, and the opportunity to experience the truest side of Abruzzo—the one where villages gather in the square under the summer evening lights.
The 2026 Decontra Patronal Feast enlivened the village of Scafa from June 12 to 14, with three days of religious and secular events. The traditional celebrations in honor of Saint Anthony and Saint Francis were accompanied by live concerts, entertainment evenings, and food stalls featuring the flavors of Abruzzese cuisine, all with free admission in Piazza Di Paolo Rosario.
The full day-by-day program was released by the Festival Committee and local channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
The Patronal Feast takes place in Piazza Di Paolo Rosario, in the village of Decontra, municipality of Scafa (PE), approximately 3 km from the center of Scafa.
By car: take the A25 motorway, exit at Scafa-Alanno, then follow the signs for the village of Decontra. By train: Scafa-San Valentino station on the Rome-Pescara line, followed by a local connection.
Admission to events and concerts is free. Food stalls serving typical Abruzzese dishes are active during the evenings.
