Welcoming summer with music at Punta Penna, between the sacred and the profane
The Dawn Concert – Summer Solstice is one of the most evocative events of the summer in Vasto, located in the province of Chieti, in the heart of the coastal Abruzzo region. Every June 21st, on the day of the summer solstice, a large crowd gathers in the square next to the Church of Santa Maria di Pennaluce in Punta Penna to await the sunrise over the Adriatic Sea, accompanied by music.
At the first light of dawn, around 5:10 AM, the Coro Polifonico Stella Maris, directed by Paola Stivaletta, brings to life a journey of songs, verses, and readings. The voices are accompanied by the Medieval Dance and Instrument Group and dancers from the Histonium Ballet Center, who enliven the morning with choreographies inspired by ancient traditions. Around a lit bonfire, readings and performances explore the meaning of the solstice, suspended between the sacred and the profane.
The event is rooted in rituals belonging to diverse cultures: since antiquity, the beginning of summer has been associated with the triumph of light and the rebirth of nature. The celebration also recalls the feast of Saint John the Baptist, traditionally linked to the night of the solstice. The morning often concludes with a moment of reflection inside the church, sealing the transition from darkness to light.
The event began in 2015 in front of the Church of San Michele, before moving to the esplanade adjacent to the Church of Santa Maria di Pennaluce, where it found its natural setting. Despite the early wake-up call, the event attracts numerous participants every year who now consider it an unmissable ritual to welcome the summer. Promoted by the Coro Polifonico Stella Maris, the concert has become a symbol of the cultural identity of Vasto and the entire Abruzzo region.
The choice of Punta Penna, with its lighthouse and small church overlooking the Punta Aderci Nature Reserve, helps make the experience unique: the silence of the promontory, the scent of the sea, and the colors of dawn provide the backdrop for one of the most poetic events in the Vasto summer calendar.
The twelfth edition of the Summer Solstice Concert took place at dawn on Sunday, June 21, 2026, around 5:10 AM, in the space adjacent to the Church of Santa Maria di Pennaluce, in Punta Penna, Vasto.
The morning combined readings, verses, songs, and dances around a bonfire. The protagonists were the Coro Polifonico Stella Maris, the Medieval Dance and Instrument Group directed by Paola Stivaletta, and dancers from the Histonium Ballet Center, coordinated by Angiola Saraceni and Eleonora Galante. The texts, curated by Fabio Lanza, were interpreted by the author himself and Vincenzo La Verghetta, exploring the ancient roots of the solstice and the connection to the feast of Saint John the Baptist. The event, with free admission, concluded with a sacred moment inside the church.
Punta Penna is located north of Vasto, in the province of Chieti. By car, it can be reached from the Vasto Nord exit of the A14 motorway; from there, continue towards the port and the Punta Penna lighthouse. The reference railway stations are Vasto-San Salvo and Porto di Vasto.
The concert takes place at dawn on June 21st, starting around 5:10 AM. Admission is free. It is recommended to arrive well in advance and to bring a sweater for the early morning hours.
Wear comfortable shoes for the gravel square and bring a blanket to sit on. Nearby, you will find the Punta Aderci Reserve and the port of Vasto, ideal for continuing your day.
