The event takes place in the evocative setting of the Leonardesco Canal Port, the port designed according to Leonardo da Vinci's studies, in the Squero area. Here, on a July evening, the canal banks fill with spectators drawn by a challenge as ancient as it is spectacular.

How the Race Works

The absolute protagonist is the greased pole: a pole nearly 14 meters long, coated in grease and placed obliquely over the canal port's water. The competing teams, each composed of six contestants – the so-called cuccagnotti – take turns attempting to climb to the top. The feat requires strength, balance, and above all strategy, because the grease and the pole's inclination make every step slippery and uncertain. Those who fail to maintain their grip inevitably end up in the canal waters, to the applause and laughter of the crowd.

Teams and the Palio

• Teams from various locations on the Adriatic coast and the Romagna hinterland compete: Cesenatico, Cervia, Gatteo, San Mauro Pascoli, Savignano sul Rubicone, Gambettola, Bellaria, and Marano Lagunare.
• At the top of the pole is the Cuccagna: a laurel wreath with cheeses, cured meats, and other delicacies, accompanied by a cash prize.
• The team that manages to conquer the Cuccagna wins the Palio, an coveted award that fuels friendly local rivalry between the towns of Romagna.
