The challenge on the greased pole over the Cesenatico Canal Port
The Cuccagna dell'Adriatico e della Romagna is one of the most characteristic events of the summer in Cesenatico, in the Province of Forlì-Cesena, in Emilia-Romagna. The event takes place in the evocative setting of the Leonardesco Canal Port, the port designed according to Leonardo da Vinci's studies, in the Squero area. Here, on a July evening, the canal banks fill with spectators drawn by a challenge as ancient as it is spectacular.
The absolute protagonist is the greased pole: a pole nearly 14 meters long, coated in grease and placed obliquely over the canal port's water. The competing teams, each composed of six contestants – the so-called cuccagnotti – take turns attempting to climb to the top. The feat requires strength, balance, and above all strategy, because the grease and the pole's inclination make every step slippery and uncertain. Those who fail to maintain their grip inevitably end up in the canal waters, to the applause and laughter of the crowd.
The evening doesn't end with the race: the Palio is preceded by the parade of contestants along the canal port, with musical accompaniment, which officially kicks off the festivities. The event is part of Cesenatico's rich calendar of major summer events, blending the sea, maritime traditions, and popular culture. It is a free and accessible event, designed for families and visitors of all ages.
Witnessing the Cuccagna dell'Adriatico means connecting with the popular soul of Romagna: a community that for decades has renewed an ancient game, transforming it into a collective celebration. Amidst the cheering for their own colors, the spectacular dives into the canal, and the backdrop of the historic maritime town center, the evening offers an authentic, fun, and deeply rooted experience of the territory's identity.
The appointment with the Cuccagna dell'Adriatico e della Romagna is set for Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 8:30 PM, along the Cesenatico Canal Port in the Squero area. The traditional format is confirmed: teams of six cuccagnotti each will attempt to climb the greased pole, nearly 14 meters long and inclined over the water, to reach the laurel wreath with cheeses, cured meats, and the cash prize.
The race will be opened by the usual parade of contestants along the canal with musical accompaniment. Admission is free. The detailed program with the final list of participating teams will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
