The road running race that crosses Maddaloni every September
The Corri Road Runners Maddaloni is an annual road running race that, at the start of autumn, brings hundreds of athletes to the asphalt of Maddaloni, a town in the province of Caserta, in Campania. This is not an elite race or a tourist showcase; it is a classic of the Caserta running calendar, built over time by local sports club volunteers and now a highly anticipated date for runners across Caserta, Naples, and Sannio. The formula is simple and effective, typical of great town races: streets closed to traffic, residents cheering from the sidewalks, and a compact group starting in the morning to fill the town center with the sound of footsteps and voices.
The official distance reported by the FIDAL calendar is 9.9 km, a route entirely on asphalt that winds through the town center. It is a race that rewards those with basic training but remains accessible: the surface is even and mostly flat, allowing those chasing a personal best to push from the very first kilometers, while those running for the pleasure of participating will find a welcoming course. In past editions, the meeting point was located on via Napoli, chosen for its ample parking and space for team tents, with the start scheduled for around 8:30 AM. The route crosses the most recognizable landmarks of the city, providing participants with a small urban map of Maddaloni, kilometer by kilometer.
The event is organized by the A.S.D. Road Runners Maddaloni, a FIDAL-affiliated club (code CE021) based on via Viviani in Maddaloni and presided over by Michele Campolattano. The club has over 130 members and does more than just organize: its athletes travel year-round for road races, half-marathons, and marathons from Campania to Lazio. Their home race is the moment the club returns the hospitality they receive from the running community elsewhere. Alongside the Corri Road Runners, the association manages other local running initiatives throughout the season.
The race has always had a neighborhood soul rather than a stadium feel. The editions have been held with the patronage and collaboration of the Municipality of Maddaloni, CONI, and sports promotion bodies like OPES Italia. On several occasions, the race has hosted solidarity initiatives promoted by local associations, opening the event to those who usually remain outside the rankings. This choice is also reflected in the awards: in addition to the top overall finishers, category placements and team rankings are recognized, ensuring every sports group goes home with something.
The event's growth is evident in the numbers from historical editions: in 2018, the race finished with 957 finishers, and the following year, for the tenth edition, organizers announced about 1,200 registered participants. These figures place the Corri Road Runners among the most attended races in the province of Caserta and explain why the September date is marked well in advance on the calendars of Campanian running clubs, from groups in Sannio to those in the Naples area.
Maddaloni rises a few kilometers from Caserta, at the foot of the Tifatini Mountains, in an agricultural plain that has always been a crossroads between the Caserta area, Sannio, and the Campanian plain. The city preserves a historic center gathered beneath the ruins of the castle and, not far away, the famous Ponti della Valle of the Carolino Aqueduct, the 18th-century hydraulic masterpiece linked to the Royal Palace of Caserta. Running here means moving through a vibrant city of over 30,000 inhabitants, where the race is not an event imposed from above, but a street festival that the neighborhood recognizes as its own.
The date is confirmed by the federal calendar: Sunday, September 20, 2026, Maddaloni hosts the fifteenth edition of its road running race, organized by the A.S.D. Road Runners Maddaloni (FIDAL code CE021). The official distance remains the established 9.9 km, entirely on asphalt, with start and finish in the town center.
This is a regional FIDAL event open to all categories, from youth to junior, U23, senior, and masters, both men and women. The race is also included in the reference calendars for Campanian running, including that of the A.S.D. Podisti Alto Sannio, which proposes it to its members as a valid event for the club championship ranking.
Within a month, Maddaloni experiences a double running season: after the spring races, the end of September brings the clubs of Caserta, Naples, Benevento, and Salerno back to the streets for an event that has become a tradition.
By car: Maddaloni is accessible from the A1 Milan-Naples motorway (Caserta Sud exit) and the A30 Caserta-Salerno, continuing on provincial roads toward the city center. By train: the city is served by the Maddaloni Inferiore and Maddaloni Superiore stations on the regional Campania lines, with connections from Caserta, Naples, and Benevento. By plane: Naples-Capodichino Airport is approximately 30 km away.
In past editions, the meeting point was set on via Napoli, an area chosen specifically for its availability of parking and space for sports clubs. It is recommended to arrive at least an hour before the start: on the morning of the race, several streets in the center are closed to traffic by municipal ordinance.
Registration is handled through your sports club according to the procedures for regional FIDAL races. Information and updates are available on the A.S.D. Road Runners Maddaloni website (www.roadrunnersmaddaloni.it) and at [email protected].
The course is entirely on asphalt: use road shoes, not trail shoes. In September in Campania, temperatures can still be high even in the morning; it is best to hydrate well before the start and take advantage of the refreshment stations along the route.
