Petal carpets in the historic center of Vasto for the Corpus Domini feast
Every year, on the occasion of the Corpus Domini solemnity, the historic center of Vasto, a city overlooking the Adriatic in the province of Chieti (Abruzzo), dresses itself in petals. The Infiorata is a young but deeply felt tradition: the streets and squares of the old town are covered with floral carpets that form a single large decorated path, along which the Eucharistic procession winds.
The flowery carpet unfolds along the route connecting Piazza Rossetti to the Co-cathedral of San Giuseppe, passing through Piazza Lucio Valerio Pudente, the area in front of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Piazza Diomede, and Corso De Parma. Over thirty images, including religious panels and symbols, bring to life a visual narrative created with petals, leaves, natural materials, and even sifted coffee grounds to achieve darker shades.
The Vasto Infiorata stems from the collaboration between the historic center parishes — Santa Maria Maggiore, San Giuseppe, San Marco, and other local entities — together with numerous secular and Catholic associations, volunteers, and the students and teachers of the Pantini-Pudente Art High School. The spirit of the event favors cooperation over competition: groups work side-by-side in the days leading up to the event to collect flowers, separate petals by color, and compose the panels, in a climate of shared celebration that involves the entire community.
The Eucharistic celebration of Corpus Domini is held in the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, followed by the traditional procession with the Blessed Sacrament along the streets of the center, embellished by the floral compositions. An appointment that combines religious devotion with folk art and creativity, attracting citizens and visitors and confirming the Infiorata as one of the most evocative events of the Vasto summer, in the tradition of the great Abruzzo flower festivals.
The 2026 edition of the Corpus Domini Flower Festival in Vasto, the fourth, was held on Saturday, June 6, 2026. The historic center was transformed into a carpet of petals with over thirty images, including panels and symbols, along the route connecting Piazza Rossetti, Piazza Lucio Valerio Pudente, and the area in front of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, up to Piazza Diomede and Corso De Parma, heading towards the Co-cathedral of San Giuseppe.
The creation involved the collaboration of local parishes, coordinated by the Parish of Santa Maria Maggiore, together with secular and Catholic associations, the VastoScienza association, and students and teachers from the Pantini-Pudente Art High School. The 6:00 PM Eucharistic celebration at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore was presided over by Archbishop Monsignor Bruno Forte with all the city's parish priests; it was followed by the procession along the decorated route.
Friday, June 5: Collection and organization of flowers, pre-separated petals, and coffee grounds at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore.
Saturday, June 6: Creation of floral carpets (over thirty panels and symbols) along the streets of the historic center; 6:00 PM Eucharistic celebration of Corpus Domini at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore presided over by Archbishop Bruno Forte; followed by the procession with the Blessed Sacrament from Piazza Rossetti to the Co-cathedral of San Giuseppe on the petal carpet.
Vasto can be reached by car via the A14 motorway (Vasto Nord or Vasto Sud exit). The Vasto-San Salvo railway station is a few kilometers from the historic center and is connected by bus. The Infiorata takes place in the historic center, which is a restricted traffic area during the event.
On the occasion of the Corpus Domini solemnity (late May or June, date varies each year). Admission is free.
It is best to arrive in the afternoon to admire the freshly completed floral carpets before the evening procession that travels along the decorated route.
