A floral carpet adorning the tuff-stone village for Corpus Domini
In the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, perched on a tuff-stone spur in the Municipality of Pitigliano (Province of Grosseto), one of the territory's most cherished traditions is renewed every year: the Corpus Domini Flower Festival. For the solemnity of Corpus Domini, the streets and squares of the historic center are dressed in petals, becoming a massive colorful canvas that is traversed in the evening by the Eucharistic procession. It is an event that unites the religious dimension with artistic and community spirit, involving the vast majority of the inhabitants of the so-called "city of tuff."
It all begins at dawn. Volunteers pour into the village streets: some bring boxes full of flowers, others bags of sawdust, while some water the decorations to keep them fresh for longer. Designs are first sketched on the cobblestones with chalk, then patiently filled with natural materials: rose and gerbera petals, laurel and rosemary leaves, sawdust, and other plant elements. Hour after hour, the individual designs merge into a single continuous "canvas" of a thousand colors that runs along the procession route, crossing the most beautiful alleys and squares of Pitigliano.
In the late afternoon, the festival reaches its climax. The bishop of the Diocese of Pitigliano-Sovana-Orbetello presides over the solemn mass in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul; at the end, the procession with the Blessed Sacrament leaves the Cathedral and crosses the historic center, walking on the newly completed floral carpet. This is the moment when the ephemeral art of the flower festival finds its meaning: the flowers, trampled by the cortege, become an act of homage and prayer.
Flower festivals have their roots in the so-called "Baroque festivals" born in Rome in the 17th century, when floral carpets were composed in front of St. Peter's Basilica; the first Corpus Domini flower festival was held in Genzano in 1778. In Pitigliano, this tradition has become part of the city's identity, with a program that is often enriched by concerts in the cathedral and candlelight processions in the days leading up to the solemnity.
The Flower Festival is not just a spectacle to observe: those who visit Pitigliano during the preparation hours can see the work of the flower artists up close and, in many cases, participate in the composition of the floral displays. Walking through the tuff-stone alleys scented with flowers, with the medieval village as a backdrop, is a unique experience in the Tuscan festival calendar.
The 2026 edition took place on Sunday, June 7. As per tradition, the flower artists worked from the early hours of the day to compose the floral displays along the streets of Pitigliano's historic center. At 5:30 PM, in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, the bishop of the Diocese of Pitigliano-Sovana-Orbetello, Monsignor Bernardino Giordano, presided over the solemn mass; at the end, the procession with the Blessed Sacrament crossed the village, walking on the flower carpet. The initiative was organized by the parish in collaboration with the Municipality of Pitigliano and with the support of Banca Tema.
Pitigliano can be reached by car via the SS74 Maremmana, about an hour and a half from Grosseto and the Orbetello motorway exit (A12/SS1 Aurelia). It is not served directly by rail: the nearest station is Albinia, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The flower festival takes place in the streets and squares of the historic center. The designs are created during the day; the solemn mass and the procession are held in the late afternoon (approximate time 5:30 PM). It is advisable to arrive in the morning or early afternoon to witness the creation of the floral carpets.
The event is free and takes place in the public spaces of the village.
Wear comfortable shoes for the uphill tuff-stone alleys. Take the opportunity to visit the cathedral, the Jewish quarter (the "Little Jerusalem"), and taste the typical products of the Maremma.
