Petal carpets for the Eucharistic procession in the heart of the Ufita Valley
On the day of the Corpus Domini solemnity, the small town of Melito Irpino, in the province of Avellino, completely changes its appearance. The streets running through the village are blanketed in colorful petals, arranged by hand to form a long, continuous floral carpet. The Eucharistic procession passes over this carpet, accompanied by the faithful, the parish choir, and the very families who spent days creating the designs. Today, the Corpus Domini Flower Festival is one of the most cherished events in the local calendar and one of the most evocative expressions of popular devotion in inland Campania.
Unlike the historic flower festivals of other Italian regions, the one in Melito Irpino is a recent tradition. The first edition dates back to 2024, when the Sant'Egidio Abate parish decided to accompany the Corpus Domini procession through the village with flower carpets for the first time. The initiative was strongly supported by the parish priest Father Michele Puopolo and received an overwhelming response: even on that first occasion, the local press spoke of a massive turnout, with the community's children as the absolute protagonists of the day. By 2026, the event reached its third edition, now firmly established as one of the town's defining identity events.
The work begins long before the Sunday of the celebration. Flowers are gathered, petals are plucked, separated by color, and finally, the designs are composed directly on the pavement, often working late into the night. In Melito Irpino, this preparation phase is the true soul of the event, as it brings together different generations: men, women, youth, and children, with the parish priest and the mayor joining in to help.
Those who covered the latest editions have emphasized one point: the Infiorata is not just about flowers, but about sacrifice, faith, friendship, and a true sense of community. A network of volunteers revolves around the parish, including the Sant'Egidio group, actively involved in parish life, Anpas volunteers who ensure safety along the route, and the parish choir that accompanies the celebration. This synergy makes the event more than just a tourist attraction: those who arrive in Melito Irpino find a festival that the town creates primarily for itself, and to which it gladly welcomes visitors.
With just under two thousand inhabitants, nestled at an altitude of about 450 meters and about forty kilometers from Avellino, Melito Irpino is one of the villages of the Ufita Valley, in the eastern part of the Campania region. It is called the "town of three lives" because its history has been broken and rebuilt several times: from the ancient settlement to the medieval village of the Norman era, to the abandonment of the historic center after the 1962 earthquake and the reconstruction of the current town. The ruins of the church of Sant'Egidio and traces of the Norman-Swabian castle remain from the old village, now a destination for scenic walks.
The area is also known for its agricultural products: San Giovanni apples, Sant'Anna pears, Ufita garlic, and caciocavallo cheeseโtypical products that tell the story of a still-vibrant countryside.
The date of the Infiorata follows the liturgical calendar: in Italy, Corpus Domini is celebrated on a Sunday. In 2026, the solemnity fell on Sunday, June 7th, and in 2025, on Sunday, June 22nd. Visitors should check the exact date each year, as it changes based on Easter.
The Melito Irpino Flower Festival does not have the scale of the large Umbrian or Sicilian events, and for this very reason, it retains an authentic and intimate character. You walk along streets covered in petals, meet the people who created them, and witness a procession that traverses the entire town: a perfect opportunity to discover the villages of Irpinia.
On the solemnity of Corpus Domini 2026, Melito Irpino renewed its most colorful appointment. The parish of Sant'Egidio Abate, led by Father Michele Puopolo, coordinated the creation of petal carpets along the streets of the center, over which the procession with the Blessed Sacrament then passed.
As was written at the end of the day, it was not just about flowers: behind the designs were hours of work, sacrifice, and friendship, in a collaboration that involved all ages. The organization was supported by Anpas volunteers for security, the Sant'Egidio group, and the parish choir for liturgical animation.
The most anticipated moment remains the passage of the procession over the floral carpet, when the colors composed with patience are crossed and partially broken: a gesture that in the tradition of flower festivals represents the very meaning of the feast, the offering of a beauty destined to last only a few hours.
By car: A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit at Grottaminarda (about 5 km away), then take the SS90 "delle Puglie" towards the Ufita Valley. Alternatively, you can use the SP Fondo Valle Ufita road. The town is about 45 km from Avellino.
The flower festival is set up along the streets of the town center, following the procession route that starts from the parish church of Sant'Egidio Abate, in Piazza della Repubblica.
The event is free and takes place outdoors: no tickets or reservations are required.
