Floral masterpieces in Piazza San Pietro for the Feast of Corpus Domini
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Corpus Domini Flower Festival is one of the most cherished annual events in Vicovaro, a village in the Aniene Valley located along the ancient Via Tiburtina Valeria, within the Metropolitan City of Rome. To mark the Solemnity of Corpus Domini—a movable feast linked to the liturgical calendar, celebrated between late May and June—the community gathers in Piazza San Pietro, in front of the 17th-century Church of San Pietro Apostolo, to continue the tradition of decorating the main square with flowers, sawdust, and other natural materials. This custom has deep roots: what began as a simple scattering of petals for the procession has evolved over generations into a true art form.
The heart of the event lies in the large floral mosaics created on the cobblestones of the square. The subjects are inspired by religious tradition; past editions have featured up to ten mosaics depicting sacred figures such as Saint Anthony of Padua, Maria Santissima Avvocata Nostra—to whom the people of Vicovaro are particularly devoted—and Jesus Christ, alongside symbols like the heart, the phoenix, and the lion. The techniques used are those of classic floral art: flower petals, colored sawdust, natural powders, and other materials are patiently arranged to create compositions with a striking painterly effect.
As with all great Italian flower festivals, the magic happens at night. Preparations begin on the eve of the event, when flower artists of all ages work side by side: local children collaborate with adults to outline the designs and fill in the sketches, a passing of the torch between generations that is the very soul of the festival. By dawn on Sunday, the square is a continuous carpet of color and scent, described by the local press as a true "masterpiece."
The day follows a well-established ritual: a marching band parades through the village, followed by Holy Mass with the blessing of the Blessed Sacrament and the solemn Corpus Domini procession over the floral carpets. In the evening, the community gathers for a final celebration, featuring the traditional dismantling of the mosaics, marking the end of the event and looking forward to next year.
The experience gained in the village has produced a group of true masters. The Vicovaro flower artists, united in an association chaired by Primo Roberti, made their debut in June 2025 at the historic Flower Festival of Rome, creating a six-by-eight-meter work titled "Spes non confundit" in front of St. Peter's Basilica, crafted by seventeen artisans using colored sawdust, powders, coffee, and flour. This recognition testifies to the high level of skill achieved by the Vicovaro school.
Attending the festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover Vicovaro, heir to the ancient Varia of the Aequi and a gateway to the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park. Beyond the Church of San Pietro Apostolo, commissioned by the Cenci-Bolognetti family in the 17th century, the Renaissance octagonal temple of San Giacomo Maggiore and the San Cosimato Convent are well worth a visit. Built on a cliff rich in Benedictine hermitages and Roman aqueduct ruins, this is where Saint Benedict stayed before moving to Subiaco.
For the 2026 edition of the Corpus Domini Flower Festival in Vicovaro, no official confirmation has been found. The event, which is date-movable due to the liturgical calendar, would have taken place according to tradition on Sunday, June 7, 2026, the day the Solemnity of Corpus Domini was celebrated in Italy.
The established format includes the overnight creation of floral mosaics in Piazza San Pietro starting on the eve of the event, with the participation of adults and children, followed on Sunday by the marching band parade, Holy Mass with the blessing of the Blessed Sacrament, the procession over the petal carpets, and the final evening celebration with the dismantling of the mosaics.
While awaiting official confirmation regarding the 2026 edition, we invite you to consult the channels of the Vicovaro Festival Committee and the Infiorata's Facebook page for updates and dates for the next edition.
Vicovaro is located about 45 km from Rome, along the Via Tiburtina Valeria (SS5). By car: take the A24 Rome-Teramo motorway, exit at Vicovaro-Mandela. By train: take the regional line Rome-Avezzano to the Mandela-Vicovaro station, a short distance from the center. The event takes place in Piazza San Pietro, in the historic center.
The event is free and open to everyone.
The best time to admire the floral mosaics in their entirety is early Sunday morning, before the procession passes. The date changes every year according to the liturgical calendar of Corpus Domini; please check the exact weekend on the Festival Committee's channels before traveling.
