A floral carpet through the historic center for the Corpus Domini feast
The Corpus Domini Flower Festival is one of the most beloved and anticipated events in Cerreto Guidi, a small village in the province of Florence, in the heart of Tuscany. On the occasion of the Corpus Domini solemnity, the streets and squares of the historic center are adorned with color thanks to a grand floral carpet that accompanies the religious procession. For one weekend, the entire village, nestled around the majestic Villa Medicea, becomes an ephemeral work of art to be explored on foot.
The route spans over 450 meters along the town's streets, including Via Roma, Via Santi Saccenti, Via Guidi, Piazza Umberto I, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, and Via della Libertร . Along this path, about forty floral panels are createdโauthentic paintings composed of petals, fresh flowers, leaves, and colored sawdust. Each year, the compositions follow a shared theme, often religious or spiritual in nature, which inspires the creativity of local groups, associations, and families.
The festival is organized by the San Leonardo Abate Parish in collaboration with numerous local entities: the Municipality of Cerreto Guidi, the Buontalenti Natural Shopping Center, the Pro Loco, the Friends of the Villa Association, the Misericordia, and the four Contrade of the Palio del Cerro, which also create their own panels. The event is also supported by the Tuscany Region. This collective participation makes the event a moment of strong community identity.
The charm of the festival also lies in witnessing its creation. On Saturday afternoon and evening, the creation phase begins with the "Artists for a Night" initiative: visitors can admire the floral artists at work along the village streets or try their hand at composing the panels, experiencing the magic of this ephemeral art firsthand.
On Sunday morning, after Holy Mass, the floral carpet welcomes the solemn Corpus Domini procession, which winds through the village, passing over the freshly completed floral panels. It is the highlight of the festival, where artistic and religious dimensions merge into a single evocative celebration. Afterward, the panels remain on display for a few more hours, leaving behind a fragrant and colorful memory.
Visiting the Cerreto Guidi Flower Festival means discovering an authentic Tuscan village, dominated by the Medici-owned Villa Medicea, in a festive and intimate atmosphere. Between art, faith, and popular tradition, it is the perfect occasion for those seeking a genuine experience away from the most crowded tourist destinations, immersed in the landscape of Montalbano and the Empolese-Valdelsa area.
