The Corpus Domini procession through flower-adorned altars and confraternities in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains

In the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains, at an altitude of 1,100 meters on the slopes of Monte Verna, the medieval village of Capizzi (province of Messina, Sicily) celebrates one of its most beloved religious festivals every year: the Corpus Domini Festival. It is an occasion where faith, popular tradition, and the ephemeral art of floral decoration blend into a single, spectacular event that involves the entire community of Capizzi.
The centerpiece of the festival is the procession of the consecrated host, enclosed in a precious monstrance and displayed for public veneration. Following the solemn mass at the Mother Church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari, the Blessed Sacrament is carried through the village streets, accompanied by the confraternities of Capizzi, who parade in their traditional festive garments. The procession winds through a historic center completely transformed for the occasion.
Throughout the various districts of the historic center, altars adorned with flowers are set up: wildflowers, roses, and Nebrodi broom create decorations dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament, before which the procession pauses in silent prayer. As the Blessed Sacrament passes, children shower the path with handfuls of rose and broom petals, while embroidered tablecloths and drapes hang from the balconies: a scenic effect that makes this festival one of the most beautiful and evocative in Capizzi.
Capizzi preserves a remarkable religious heritage, from the Mother Church with its Gothic portal to the Sanctuary of Saint James the Greater, one of the oldest Jacobite churches in Sicily. The village's devotion is expressed throughout the year with patronal festivals, but Corpus Domini remains one of the events that best captures the identity of this Nebrodi community, suspended between mountains, history, and tradition.
The 2026 Corpus Domini Festival in Capizzi, in the Nebrodi Mountains, will take place in June according to the liturgical calendar. Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to check with the parish of Saint Nicholas of Bari or local confraternities closer to the event.
