The diocesan Eucharistic solemnity crosses the heart of Catania
The Corpus Domini Eucharistic Procession is one of the most widely attended religious celebrations in the liturgical calendar of the Municipality of Catania, Sicily. Promoted by the Archdiocese of Catania, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ unites parishes, lay associations, families, and the faithful from across the diocese in a single, grand moment of communion that traverses the city center.
The day begins with the solemn Eucharistic concelebration in the Cathedral Basilica, presided over by the Archbishop. Afterwards, the Blessed Sacrament is carried in procession along Via Etnea, the famous thoroughfare that serves as the living room and backbone of Catania's historic center. The procession concludes with the solemn final blessing.
To encourage maximum participation in this moment of diocesan communion, the Archdiocese suspends afternoon Masses in city parishes, inviting the faithful to gather for the common celebration.
Corpus Domini in Catania is not merely a liturgical rite, but a living expression of Sicilian religious tradition and the identity of the Etnean city. Year after year, the Archbishop's reflections weave Eucharistic spirituality with the social themes of the region: solidarity, attention to the most vulnerable, and the commitment to "feed" the city with shared love.
Deeply linked to the cult of Saint Agatha, its patron saint, Catania confirms with Corpus Domini the centrality of the religious dimension in city life. The procession along Via Etnea, amidst the Baroque palaces and squares of the center, offers participants an experience of communal faith within the evocative urban setting of the metropolis in the Province of Catania.
The 2026 edition of the Corpus Domini solemnity in Catania was celebrated on Sunday, June 7, 2026, developed around the theme "Eucharist: School of Martyrdom."
The diocesan program featured the solemn Eucharistic concelebration in the Cathedral Basilica at 6:00 PM, presided over by the Archbishop, followed at 7:00 PM by the Eucharistic procession along Via Etnea, which concluded at the Church of San Biagio in Sant'Agata alla Fornace with the solemn blessing. To encourage local participation, afternoon Masses in city parishes were suspended.
The celebration takes place on the Solemnity of Corpus Domini (between late May and June, according to the liturgical calendar).
Departure from the Cathedral Basilica of Catania (Piazza Duomo); procession along Via Etnea to the church designated by the Archdiocese for the final blessing.
The historic center of Catania is easily accessible on foot or by public transport. During the procession, traffic changes may occur along Via Etnea: it is recommended to travel on foot and avoid using cars in the center.
Participation is free and open to all.
