Orvieto, City of Corpus Domini
Orvieto, in the province of Terni, is universally known as the city of Corpus Domini. Its Cathedral houses the Sacred Corporal, the linen stained with blood linked to the Miracle of Bolsena of 1263: according to tradition, it was precisely that Eucharistic prodigy that prompted Pope Urban IV to institute the feast of Corpus Domini for all of Christendom.
The Procession and the Sacred Corporal
The religious heart of the feast is the solemn procession that crosses the historic center, during which the reliquary of the Sacred Corporal, a masterpiece of medieval goldsmithing, is carried in ostension. The week of celebrations includes ostensions, adorations, and liturgical moments in the Cathedral.
The Historical Pageant
Accompanying the procession is the spectacular Historical Pageant, one of the most impressive re-enactments in Umbria: over four hundred figures in 14th-century costumes parade from the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo to the Cathedral, with banners of the districts, knights, crossbowmen, civil and religious authorities. The feast is preceded by the refined Ladies' Procession, dedicated to the female figures of the medieval court.
A Shared Memory
More than folklore, Orvieto's Corpus Domini is the living memory of an entire community, which each year renews the link between the Miracle, the city, and its cathedral. For the visitor, it is an opportunity to witness one of the most heartfelt and scenic religious and historical festivals in Italy.
Corpus Domini Orvieto — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of Orvieto's Corpus Domini culminates on the weekend of June 5-7. On Friday, June 5, at 9 PM, the 'Nicoletta De Angelis' Ladies' Procession parades, preceded at 7:30 PM by a scene of medieval life with horses in Piazza del Popolo.
On Sunday, June 7, at 10 AM, the 76th Historical Pageant begins: over 400 figures in 14th-century costumes accompany the solemn procession of the Sacred Corporal from the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo to the Cathedral. Among the 2026 novelties, a traveling photographic exhibition in the shop windows of the historic center and a new costume created with the Brera Academy of Fine Arts.

How to get there
Orvieto can be reached from the Orvieto exit of the A1 motorway and from the train station on the Rome-Florence line, with a funicular to the historic center on the cliff. The procession and pageants take place in the streets and squares of the center, between the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the Cathedral.
Admission
Admission to the procession, pageants, and square events is free. During the Corpus Domini days, traffic regulations are in effect in the historic center. Program and times are available on the website of the Municipality of Orvieto and the Diocese of Orvieto-Todi.
