The historical reenactment and the Palio dei Rioni in one of the most beautiful villages in Italy
Cordovado, included among the most beautiful villages in Italy, is a jewel of western Friuli enclosed within the walls of its ancient castle. Every year, on the last weekend of August, its historic center immerses itself in the atmospheres of the 13th-14th century thanks to Cordovado Medievale, one of the oldest and most beloved historical reenactments in the region, founded in 1986.
For two days, the village comes alive with historic costumed parades featuring nobles, knights, musicians, and flag-wavers, military encampments with weapon demonstrations, an artisan market with period shops and crafts, and performances by jesters, dancers, drummers, and fire-eaters. Taverns offer food and drinks inspired by tradition, in an immersive experience capable of bringing the daily life of the Middle Ages closer to audiences of all ages.
The competitive heart of the event is the Palio dei Rioni, the ancient challenge between the four districts of the town—Villa Belvedere, Suzzolins, Saccudello, and Borgo. The competition is divided into several specialties: the hunt for symbols, the barrel theft, the flag joust, and the archery contest. A competition that involves entire families and keeps the district rivalry alive from generation to generation.
Organized by Pro Cordovado with the support of the Municipality of Cordovado, the reenactment is the result of the work of hundreds of volunteers who sew costumes, set up scenery, and animate the village. Among the longest-running in Friuli Venezia Giulia, it is an unmissable event for those who love history, the atmosphere of villages, and authentic village festivals.
The 2026 edition of Cordovado Medievale will be held on the last weekend of August, Saturday 29 and Sunday 30, in the historic center of the village. For two days, Cordovado will return to the atmospheres of the 13th-14th century with costumed parades, military encampments, an artisan market, shows, and taverns, culminating in the exciting Palio dei Rioni.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition is under development and will be published by Pro Cordovado in the weeks preceding the event. The festival, generally from 10 AM to 11 PM, will include:
