The Nativity staged within the Forre canyon, amidst tufa rock, music, and a thousand years of history
There are living nativity scenes, and then there is the one in Corchiano, a small town in the Province of Viterbo, in the Lazio region. Here, the Nativity is not staged in a square or a typical village setting, but at the bottom of the Forre del Rio Fratta, a deep canyon carved into tufa rock by water over millennia, considered a natural monument unique in Europe. Spectators descend along the rocky walls to witness an itinerant theatrical performance that unfolds on multiple levels, from the top down to the Nativity cave.
The staging follows the sacred story through a series of living tableaux arranged along the path: at the top, Adam and Eve, then the scene of the census, and finally, at the lowest and most evocative point, the cave with the Holy Family. Bringing these scenes to life are over one hundred residents of Corchiano, who transform each year into shepherds, artisans, Roman soldiers, and commoners, recreating daily life from that era.
What truly makes this nativity scene special is its artistic flair. The soundtrack accompanying the show is composed by Oscar winner Nicola Piovani, while the narrator guiding the viewer through the story is the unforgettable voice of Gigi Proietti. The result is an intense, cinematic atmosphere where the darkness of the Forre, the lights, the music, and the spoken word blend into a single emotional experience.
The performance in the Forre is the heart of the event, but the entire historic center of Corchiano joins in the festivities. During the opening days, the village hosts Santa's House, markets featuring local products, and food stalls serving mulled wine and roasted chestnuts, creating an atmosphere of authentic Christmas tradition. In the morning, it is also possible to join a guided tour of the Forre Natural Monument to discover the canyon by daylight, which serves as the backdrop for the nativity scene by night.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Corchiano in collaboration with the Municipality, the Living Nativity is an event that has been running for over fifty years, involving the entire community and passed down from generation to generation. More than just an event, it is a collective ritual that unites the town every winter and attracts thousands of visitors from all over Italy, drawn by the uniqueness of a spectacle born from the intersection of faith, theater, and nature.
The 56th edition confirmed the formula that made the Corchiano Living Nativity famous: an itinerant theatrical show set in the Forre canyon, structured on multiple levels, from the Adam and Eve and census tableaux to the Nativity cave. During the opening days, the historic center hosted Santa's House, markets with local products, and stalls with mulled wine and roasted chestnuts. Each day featured two evening performances, preceded in the morning by guided tours of the Forre Natural Monument.
