The re-enactment of the discovery of America in the town that claims the birth of Christopher Columbus
Cogoleto, a town on the Riviera di Ponente in the Metropolitan City of Genoa, has claimed for centuries to be the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, the navigator who reached the Americas in 1492. The historical re-enactment Cogoleto ai Tempi di Colombo is dedicated to this proud tradition, bringing the village back to the era of great explorations.
The event enlivens the historic centre and the seafront with parades of figures in Renaissance costume, flag-wavers, period dances, and re-enactments of 15th-century life. A symbolic moment is the representation of the departure of the caravels, recalling the start of the legendary journey into the unknown. Period shops, musicians, and scenes of popular life complete the historical setting.
Included among the Authentic Ligurian events and supported by the Liguria Region, the re-enactment is an opportunity to discover Cogoleto and its connection to the figure of Columbus, in an event that combines history, entertainment, and local identity. A festival that revives one of the most fascinating chapters of Ligurian and world history, on the shores of the sea from which, according to tradition, the great navigator set sail.
The 2026 edition of Cogoleto ai Tempi di Colombo is expected in autumn, included in the calendar of Authentic Ligurian events funded by the Region. The re-enactment will recreate the 15th-century setting dedicated to the famous navigator, with parades, dances, and the symbolic scene of the caravels' departure. Detailed dates will be announced by the Municipality.
The precise dates for the 2026 edition are to be confirmed. The traditional structure of the re-enactment includes:
