Wooden chalets, an ice rink, and a Ferris wheel in the heart of the port city
The Civitavecchia Christmas Market is the signature event that, from late December through Epiphany, fills the center of this major port city in Lazio with festive lights and holiday spirit. Promoted by the Municipality of Civitavecchia, in the province of Rome, the event is part of a rich program of holiday festivities that animate the squares, streets, and alleys of the historic center each year, creating a walkable trail of stalls, performances, and community celebrations.
The commercial hub of the event is the craft market, set up with traditional wooden chalets where vendors offer handicrafts, hobby items, collectibles, gift ideas, and street food specialties. The route winds through the pedestrian heart of the city, along Corso Centocelle and the surrounding squares, and remains open daily until evening, accompanying residents and visitors throughout the holiday season.
What makes Christmas in Civitavecchia particularly popular with families is Piazza della Vita, which hosts the ice skating rink, Santa's Village, and the Ferris wheel. These attractions, children's games, and the lights decorating the center create a magical atmosphere, making it one of the most anticipated events of the city's winter season. Admission to the market and the public areas is free, with fees applying only to certain attractions.
The market is part of a broader calendar featuring concerts, parades, roving performances, local bands, and initiatives dedicated to promoting local food and wine. It is a Christmas celebration designed to combine tradition, participation, and local pride, engaging everyone from children to adults. For those arriving in Civitavecchia by sea or train, the compact, pedestrian-friendly center makes the market easily accessible and a pleasure to explore on foot.
Returning every year between December and January, the Civitavecchia Christmas Market has become a well-established fixture among the Christmas markets of Lazio and Upper Lazio, appreciated by locals, cruise passengers, and tourists who choose the city as a gateway to Rome.
Christmas in Civitavecchia officially kicked off on December 7 with the "Magic of Lights" event: starting at 5:00 PM, a picturesque snowfall set the stage for the performance of the Puccini Band, followed at 6:00 PM by the lighting of the Christmas tree and the city's festive lights. On December 8, celebrations continued with an opening parade, circus performers, the Ponchielli Band, and the National Historical Dance Company.
In Piazza della Vita, the ice skating rink, Santa's Village, and the Ferris wheel were set up, while the craft market with its wooden chalets remained open daily along Corso Centocelle. Among the scheduled events were a charity concert for Save the Children on December 21, roving performances, and initiatives showcasing local De.C.O. products from Upper Lazio, concluding with the Befana on January 6, 2026.
