Great open-air cinema in the squares of Sora, between the Santa Maria Steps and Piazza Mayer Ross
Launched in 2023, the "Cinema under the Stars - Stardust" series has quickly become a staple of the Sora summer season. The concept is simple and effective: take the big screen out of traditional theaters and into the squares and most beautiful corners of the historic center, offering citizens and visitors free movie nights under the July sky. Screenings begin at 9:30 PM, when the heat of the day gives way to the evening breeze of the Liri Valley.
The series takes place in two iconic locations in the city center, which alternate throughout the program:
In past editions, screenings have also reached other corners of the city, such as the Viale Napoli square and the hamlet of Carnello, confirming the widespread and popular nature of the initiative.
Each edition offers about ten titles chosen to satisfy diverse audiences: the season's major international hits, the most beloved Italian comedies, auteur cinema, and animated films designed for families. It is a cross-cutting program that makes the series a true collective ritual: children in the front row for cartoons, families and young people for blockbusters, and cinephiles for art-house titles.
"Cinema under the Stars - Stardust" is promoted by the Municipal Administration of Sora, in the province of Frosinone, with the patronage of the Municipality and the collaboration of ARCI (in past editions also with the support of the CCA and local sponsors). The series is part of the summer event calendar with which the city enlivens its squares, enhancing the urban heritage as a cultural stage.
Nestled on the banks of the Liri River at the foot of the Ernici Mountains, Sora is one of the most vibrant centers in southern Lazio and the birthplace of Vittorio De Sica: a bond with the seventh art that makes the choice to celebrate cinema in its squares even more natural. Attending a screening under the stars is also an opportunity to discover the historic center, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and the flavors of Ciociaria cuisine in the local eateries.
From July 9 to 20, 2026, the summer open-air cinema series returns to Sora for its fourth edition. The Municipal Administration, with the patronage of the Municipality of Sora and the collaboration of ARCI, offers a rich program of ten titles ranging from major international hits to comedies, auteur cinema, and animated films for families.
All screenings start at 9:30 PM and alternate between two of the most evocative settings in the city center: the opening and closing nights are held on the Santa Maria Church Steps, while the heart of the series takes place in Piazza Mayer Ross. The program includes highly anticipated titles such as "The Devil Wears Prada 2", "The Bad Guys 2", "Super Mario Galaxy", and "Nuremberg", alongside Italian cinema with "Cinque Secondi" and "Il Maestro".
Sora can be reached by car via the Liri SS690 Sora-Avezzano expressway and connections from Frosinone and Cassino (A1 motorway, Frosinone or Ceprano exits). The Sora train station is on the Avezzano-Roccasecca regional line; COTRAL bus connections are available to and from Frosinone and Rome.
Screenings start at 9:30 PM; admission is free until capacity is reached, so it is advisable to arrive a little early, especially for the most anticipated animated films for families. The evenings take place outdoors: in case of bad weather, check the Municipality of Sora's channels for any changes.
