An open-air cinema

For a few summer evenings, the municipal park of San Tammaro changes its purpose: the greenery of the public garden, the benches, and the pathways give way to a large screen and an outdoor seating area. This is the essence of «Cinema under the Stars», the free film series promoted and organized by the municipal administration, which reaches its second edition in 2026 following the positive public response recorded the previous year.

There is nothing monumental about this initiative, and that is precisely its value: a town of a few thousand inhabitants gathering, without paying for a ticket, to watch a film projected outdoors. All screenings are held in the municipal park, starting at 9:00 PM with free admission: no reservations or tickets are required, just arrive early to find a seat.

An initiative by the Municipality of San Tammaro

The series is a project directed by the Municipality of San Tammaro, led by Mayor Vincenzo D'Angelo, who has expressed satisfaction with the launch of this second edition. The stated goal is twofold: to offer citizens moments of leisure and culture at no cost and, at the same time, to restore the municipal park's role as a place for gathering, lived and frequented even in the evening hours.

It is a choice that many small towns in the province of Caserta have been making in recent years: using existing public spaces — parks, squares, school courtyards — as temporary summer cinemas, with low management costs and a strong return in terms of participation. In San Tammaro, the formula worked immediately, justifying the return of the series in 2026.

San Tammaro is a town in the province of Caserta, in Campania, located in the plain northwest of the provincial capital, a short distance from Santa Maria Capua Vetere and Caserta itself. The municipal territory hosts the Real Sito di Carditello, the ancient Bourbon estate now returned to the public and home to cultural events and concerts, which has brought the town's name back to national attention.

«Cinema under the Stars» moves on a completely different, much more domestic register: it is not a large-scale festival nor an event designed to attract tourists from afar, but a local initiative, aimed primarily at those who live in San Tammaro. This is also why it deserves to be told: it represents well how the Italian cultural summer is built, evening after evening, in smaller towns.

Who the series is designed for

The typical audience for «Cinema under the Stars» is diverse. There are families with children, who take advantage of an evening outdoors at no cost; there are young people, for whom the municipal park is already a regular meeting point; and there are older residents, who find the evening screening an opportunity for social interaction just a stone's throw from home.
