Lights, crafts, and gospel music in the historic center of the Vallo di Diano

When December arrives, Teggiano — a medieval village perched in the heart of the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno — undergoes a transformation. Its narrow historic streets, stone portals, and squares fill with lights, making the town one of the most enchanting Christmas destinations in inland Campania. The initiative, promoted by the Municipality of Teggiano, combines a craft market, widespread light displays, and musical performances in the village churches.
The heart of the event is the Chiostro di San Francesco in Piazza Municipio: under the convent's arches, stalls offer gift ideas, handmade crafts, Christmas decorations, artistic creations, and locally sourced products. In the 2025 edition, the market was open from 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM with free admission. Over the years, the Municipality has issued public calls for exhibitors, reflecting a well-established and professional format.
The lighting project extends beyond the main square: lights reach the most populated hamlets of the municipal area, ensuring the Christmas atmosphere is shared by the entire community, not just the historic core. Alongside traditional lights, luminous scenographies designed especially for children — a sleigh, a 3D carriage, and a large glowing teddy bear — have become the most photographed spots in the village.
The soundtrack of the evenings is provided by gospel music. In 2025, the Chiesa di San Francesco hosted two concerts: the Gospel Italian Singers, directed by Maestro Francesco Finizio, featuring international soloist Ruth Whyte, and the Gospel'n Joy ensemble, which blends traditional and contemporary spiritual repertoire. Both evenings began at 6:00 PM, coinciding with the lighting of the displays.
At the end of Piazza San Cono, within the Seggio, the Pro Loco Teggiano sets up a highly detailed artistic nativity scene: a display that honors the long-standing Neapolitan tradition and has become a must-see during the holidays.
These Christmas initiatives are part of the "Journey into the Vallo di Diano" project, for which Teggiano serves as the lead municipality for a network of six administrations, co-financed by the 2021-2027 Development and Cohesion Fund. The goal is to de-seasonalize tourism and bring life back to historic centers during the winter months by showcasing heritage, craftsmanship, and local identity. Mayor Michele Di Candia presented the evenings as a way to offer the community, especially children, moments of joy and shared culture.
At the time of writing, the Municipality of Teggiano has not yet published the 2026 Christmas calendar. However, the event is recurring: in recent years, evenings have been concentrated between the Immaculate Conception and the weeks immediately preceding Christmas, with illuminations throughout the historic center and hamlets, the market in the Chiostro di San Francesco, and the artistic nativity scene by the Pro Loco Teggiano at the Seggio in Piazza San Cono.
The initiatives are part of the "Journey into the Vallo di Diano" network project, with Teggiano as the lead municipality, making the continuation of the format likely for the 2026 season. For final dates, times, and programs, please refer to the notices from the Municipality (province of Salerno) and the Pro Loco channels.
Teggiano can be reached by car via the A2 del Mediterraneo Motorway, taking the Sala Consilina or Padula-Buonabitacolo exits. The historic center is on a hill: it is best to leave your car in the parking lots at the edge of the village and walk up towards Piazza Municipio and Piazza San Cono.
Events are concentrated in December, usually in the afternoon and evening. In the 2025 edition, the market in the Chiostro di San Francesco was open from 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM, and concerts started at 6:00 PM, with free admission.

Winter evenings in the Vallo di Diano are cold: wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes for the stone alleys. The village can be easily explored on foot in half a day, combining the market with a stroll through the town's churches.
