The traditions of Saint Lucy, the Immaculate Conception, and the Epiphany in the historic center

Christmas Lights is the holiday event series that brings the historic center of Erchie to life every year. This town of about nine thousand residents is located in the province of Brindisi, Puglia, right on the border between the lands of Brindisi, Lecce, and Taranto. With ancient Messapian roots, the town boasts a charming, compact urban layout that, during the holidays, transforms into a trail of lights, music, and folk traditions. The initiative is promoted by the Pro Loco Erchie with the patronage of the Municipality of Erchie and the Pastoral Unit.
The program brings together the three major winter holidays under one banner: the celebrations of Saint Lucy, the Immaculate Conception, and the Epiphany. This creates a journey that accompanies residents and visitors from Advent until the arrival of the Befana, alternating moments of spirituality, family entertainment, and the promotion of local gastronomic excellence. The streets and squares of the village become a stage for guided tours, street performances, games for children, and food tastings.
The symbolic heart of the event is the Sanctuary of Saint Lucy, one of Erchie's most iconic landmarks. Devotion to the Syracusan martyr dates back to the Middle Ages and is linked, according to tradition, to the stopover of the saint's relics in Puglia during their transfer from Syracuse to Constantinople. Beneath the temple flows a spring of water considered miraculous by popular piety and a destination for pilgrimages; the place of worship was elevated to a sanctuary in 1953. The festival's guided tours offer a chance to rediscover this religious and artistic heritage alongside the historic center.
The program is divided into three festive days that mark the Christmas season:
Alongside religious events and entertainment, "Christmas Lights" dedicates ample space to local food and wine: tastings allow visitors to savor the traditional products of the Erchie and Salento area, in a blend of culture, community, and flavors that represents one of the event's hallmarks.
The festival is organized by the Pro Loco Erchie as part of projects funded by the Puglia Region to support local tourism associations. It is a promotional effort aimed at enhancing the town's historical, religious, and gastronomic heritage and enlivening the historic center during the holidays. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
