The Christmas program of the Lucanian capital
Christmas in the City is the event program with which the Municipality of Potenza accompanies the Lucanian capital throughout the holiday season, from the beginning of December until Epiphany. Not a single event, but a large container that brings together dozens of initiatives for hundreds of overall appointments: markets, nativity scenes, concerts, shows for children, entertainment, and lights.
The squares of the center - from Piazza Mario Pagano to Piazza Matteotti, from Piazza Aldo Moro to the historic center - transform into festive spaces, while the calendar also involves theaters, neighborhoods, and symbolic places of the city. It is the time when Potenza dresses up for the holidays and intensely experiences the winter vacation days.
The heart of the program is the Christmas markets, with wooden stalls and typical products, and the Santa Claus Village, mainly dedicated to the little ones. There is also a living nativity scene in the neighborhoods, an itinerant Christmas train, and numerous attractions that liven up the center on weekends.
Among the most anticipated moments are spectacular shows like the descent of Santa Claus and, on Epiphany, the flight of the Befana from the Teatro Stabile, which has been attracting many residents to the heart of the city for years.
Promoted by the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Potenza, Christmas in the City is designed to involve families, children, young people, and visitors, with particular attention to local associations and realities. For those visiting Basilicata during the holidays, it is the best opportunity to experience the Christmas atmosphere of the capital of the Province of Potenza.
The 2025-2026 season of Christmas in the City brought 80 events and 255 appointments to Potenza, from December 6, 2025, to January 6, 2026. Markets, nativity scenes, shows for children, entertainment, and lights animated the squares and the historic center of the capital throughout the holiday season.
Among the highlights were the descent of Santa Claus on December 21 in Piazza Matteotti, the living nativity scene in the Rione Cocuzzo, and the traditional flight of the Befana from the Teatro Stabile on Epiphany.
How to get there: most events take place in the center of Potenza, between Piazza Mario Pagano, Piazza Matteotti, Piazza Aldo Moro, and the historic center, which are also accessible via the city's escalators.
Tickets: most events are free; some shows or activities may require a ticket.
Accommodation: Potenza has hotels and B&Bs in the city center.
