Christmas markets, Santa's House, and a living nativity scene in the hamlet of Marigliano

Faibano is a small hamlet of Marigliano, in the province of Naples, just outside the Nola area. Every year, from December 1st until Epiphany, the village comes alive with "Christmas in Faibano": a series of events blending markets, children's workshops, sacred music, and a grand living nativity scene. This is not a commercial event, but a celebration born from the residents themselves: families open their courtyards, artisans lend their antique tools, and volunteers manage the costumes and sets.
The calendar kicks off on December 1st with Christmas markets set up in the courtyard of the San Giovanni Battista parish on Via San Giovanni Battista. Stalls feature small crafts, decorations, festive sweets, and items made by parish groups. Proceeds are not for private profit but are reinvested into the community to fund the living nativity sets and other local initiatives. In the documented edition, the markets were also held the following Sunday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, following the 10:30 AM mass.
Designed for the little ones, Santa's House opens its doors on December 8th and remains open on subsequent Sundays—December 15th, 22nd, and 29th—as well as January 1st and 6th. With games, storytelling, workshops, and, of course, a meeting with Santa Claus himself, it is the event that draws families from Faibano and neighboring towns every year.
On December 29th, the community gathers for "Note di Natale," a Christmas concert conducted by maestro Luigi Esposito and performed by the parish choir alongside children and teenagers from Catholic Action. It is a more intimate moment, serving as a bridge between the joy of the markets and the solemnity of the Epiphany celebrations.
This is the heart of the festival. The scene is set along Via Guercia, a narrow street with characteristic volcanic paving, where private courtyards open to host recreations of ancient workshops, banquet tables, market stalls, and even a synagogue. Over a hundred actors of all ages and backgrounds bring the Nativity story to life. The stable features a real ox and donkey, and local newborns take turns playing the role of Baby Jesus. Bagpipers accompany the arrival of the Three Wise Men, which concludes the performance. The props used are not mere scenery; they are tools of ancient trades preserved for generations by local artisans and farmers.
On January 6th, the arrival of the Three Wise Men at the church and the Christmas raffle draw officially close the festival. However, Faibano's traditions continue: on January 17th, the community gathers again for the feast of Saint Anthony Abbot, featuring the rosary, mass, the blessing of animals, and the lighting of the "fucarone," a large propitiatory bonfire, followed by a tasting of local products and folk music.
"Christmas in Faibano" is organized by the San Giovanni Battista parish, the "Carmine Esposito" parish Catholic Action, and the Pro Loco Civitatis of Marigliano, with the collaboration of the entire Faibano community. As the organizers emphasize, the events are held without any public funding and are strictly non-profit: the goal is to create moments of joyful and serene fraternity.
Faibano belongs to the Municipality of Marigliano, in the province of Naples, Campania, about twenty kilometers from the regional capital. It is one of many Christmas celebrations in the Vesuvius and Nola area that keep the tradition of the Neapolitan nativity scene alive, though here it is transformed from figurines into real people: an entire hamlet that, for one evening, becomes Bethlehem.
"Christmas in Faibano" is a community festival that takes place every year in the hamlet of Faibano, Marigliano, in the province of Naples. For the 2025/2026 season, no official program has been published by the organizers: the dates, times, and events listed here correspond to the traditional schedule of the event and should be considered indicative.
The period remains between December 1st and January 6th, featuring Christmas markets in the parish courtyard, Santa's House for children, the choir's Christmas concert, and, as the most anticipated moment, the living nativity scene set up along Via Guercia with over a hundred actors. The festival traditionally closes with the arrival of the Three Wise Men and the Christmas raffle draw on Epiphany.
Faibano is a hamlet of Marigliano (NA), in Campania. By car: A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, Nola exit, then provincial roads towards Marigliano; alternatively, use the Asse Mediano/SS 7 bis. By train: Marigliano station on the EAV Circumvesuviana line (Naples-Nola-Baiano), then bus or taxi to the hamlet. Nearest airport: Naples-Capodichino, about 20 km away.
The events take place in the streets, the church, and parish spaces and are free to attend. There is no ticketing system: the event is self-financed through market proceeds, the Christmas raffle, and private donations.
The living nativity scene takes place in the evening along Via Guercia, which has uneven stone paving: comfortable shoes and warm clothing are recommended. It is best to arrive early, as the hamlet's narrow streets fill up quickly, and park along the main roads. The visit is suitable for families with children.
