About Varsi Choral Review

Every summer, the Parish Church of San Pietro in Varsi, a small village in the Parma Apennines in Emilia-Romagna, hosts a choral review promoted by the Coro Monte Dosso. Choirs from different regions take turns in a program that intertwines popular mountain singing and coded polyphony, in a climate of friendship and recollection. The initiative is also a moment of remembrance dedicated to the volunteers of AVIS and Assistenza Pubblica, the solidary heart of the Val Ceno community.

A choral review in the Parma mountains

In the heart of the Apennines, the Municipality of Varsi, in Val Ceno, hosts an annual choral review that has become an eagerly awaited event of the summer season. Promoted by the Coro Monte Dosso, a group formed in 2019 and rooted in the deep vocal tradition of this area of Emilia-Romagna, in the province of Parma, the event brings together amateur choirs in a musical dialogue that spans repertoires and generations.

From spontaneous song to coded song

The title of the event clearly conveys its spirit: a journey that starts from spontaneous song, the popular and mountain singing born from the desire to be together, and moves towards coded song, constructed and harmonized polyphony. The guest choirs perform pieces from the Alpine tradition and popular inspiration, alongside more structured works, offering the audience a varied and engaging listening experience within the evocative Parish Church of San Pietro.

Music and the memory of volunteering

The review is more than just a concert; it is also a gesture of gratitude. The event serves as a moment of remembrance dedicated to all the members and volunteers of AVIS and Assistenza Pubblica - Croce Bianca of Varsi, organizations that have animated the community's solidarity for decades. In various editions, the collections have been donated to charitable causes, including the flood-affected areas of Emilia-Romagna.

A region that sings

The Coro Monte Dosso takes its name from the mountain overlooking the town of Varsi and stems from the singing tradition that has always characterized these places. The review, which also involves local schoolchildren, emphasizes the community dimension of music and is part of the network of choirs of AERCO (Emilia-Romagna Choirs Association) and Feniarco.

  • Free admission, in a collected and familiar atmosphere
  • Guest choirs from various Italian regions
  • Repertoire ranging from mountain songs, popular music, and polyphony
  • Set in the historic Church of San Pietro in Varsi

For those visiting the Parma Apennines in summer, the review is the ideal opportunity to combine the discovery of the villages of Val Ceno with the listening of authentic singing, deeply rooted in its land.
