Sannio street food, music, and street performers in the stone alleys of Morcone
Chiazze e Cucchiaro is the food and wine event that enlivens the historic center of Morcone every late June. This village of just under five thousand inhabitants is perched at an altitude of 680 meters in the Province of Benevento, in Campania. The name evokes two elements that go hand in hand here: the "chiazze" (the small squares that open up unexpectedly among the stone alleys) and the "cucchiaro" (the spoon of the traditional Sannio peasant table). Launched in 2022 by the Pro Loco Murgantia, the event reached its fifth edition in 2026.
The heart of the event is a gastronomic trail set up along the paved streets of the San Marco area, the oldest and most scenic part of the village. Stalls are distributed among arches, stairways, and small squares: you walk and taste as you go, without a fixed table and without haste. The menu features Sannio street food, built on local traditional dishes passed down from generation to generation, telling the authentic flavors of a land generous in grain, legumes, cured meats, and mountain cheeses.
The itinerant format is the true highlight of the event: the village does not merely serve as a backdrop, but becomes the route itself, with the scenery changing at every stop.
Tastings are accompanied by music and street performers, who rotate along the route throughout the weekend: live sets, performances, and entertainment await you around every corner. On Saturday, the evening doesn't end with the stalls: from 11:00 PM, the Area Presepe turns into an open-air disco, designed especially for younger audiences, extending the party under the Sannio stars.
Chiazze e Cucchiaro stems from a collaboration that speaks volumes about Morcone's identity: the Pro Loco Murgantia works alongside the Municipality of Morcone and the Il Presepe nel Presepe association, which manages the famous Christmas nativity scene in the same San Marco area, where the villageโwith its stone houses clinging to the slopeโbecomes a living stage. In summer, those same alleys and ancient stones host the festival of flavors: two faces of the same idea of a community that opens up and shares its story.
Before the stalls open, guided walks are offered in the historic center under the name Morcone Experience: an itinerary through scenic viewpoints and iconic landmarks of the village, with reservations required at the numbers indicated on the official posters. It is the best way to understand the layout of this vertical village before dedicating yourself to the spoon.
In the calendar of festivals in the Province of Benevento, Chiazze e Cucchiaro occupies a unique space: it is not the classic square festival under a tent, but a gastronomic walk inside an intact historic center, where the scenery is free and the food is homemade. For those visiting inland Campania, it is also a convenient opportunity to discover the lesser-known Sannio region, a short distance from the Matese mountains and the Tammaro valley, in a weekend that combines food, music, and walking.
The historic center of Morcone hosted the fifth edition of Chiazze e Cucchiaro on Saturday, June 20, and Sunday, June 21, 2026, an event dedicated to tradition, good food, and the beauty of the village. The organization was managed by the Pro Loco Murgantia together with the Municipality of Morcone and the Il Presepe nel Presepe association, welcoming residents and visitors among the alleys and squares of the San Marco district.

Morcone is located in the upper Sannio region, along the SS 87 Sannitica road that connects Benevento to Campobasso: it is about forty kilometers from the provincial capital. Those arriving from the A1 motorway can exit at Caianello and continue on the SS 372 Telesina towards Benevento, then head up towards Morcone. By train, the reference station is Benevento, from which you can continue by bus or car.
During the event, it is best to leave your car in the large sports field area near the Villa Comunale: from there, a free shuttle and carriage service takes you to the heart of the event. The route winds through stone alleys, stairways, and small squares, so comfortable shoes are essential and strollers are not recommended.
Access to the village and the route is free: you only pay for what you consume at the gastronomic stalls. Individual dish prices are not released in advance by the organizers.
Accommodation in the village is limited, consisting of bed and breakfasts and nearby farmhouses: it is better to book in advance or stay in Telese Terme, Benevento, or Campobasso. At an altitude of 680 meters, June evenings can be cool, so it is useful to bring a sweatshirt. Guided walks must be booked in advance at the numbers indicated on the official Pro Loco Murgantia posters.
