About Chianti Ultra Trail

The Chianti Ultra Trail by UTMB turns Radda in Chianti into the global capital of trail running. As a stage of the prestigious UTMB World Series, the event draws over 5,000 athletes from more than 80 nations to compete across five distances, ranging from the 10 km Chianti Wine Run to the epic 120 km Ultra Trail Chianti Castles. Four days of racing, an event village, sports, and breathtaking landscapes featuring vineyards, castles, and medieval hamlets in the heart of Tuscany.

World-class trail running in the heart of Chianti

Every March, the village of Radda in Chianti, in the province of Siena, becomes the nerve center for one of the most anticipated events on the international trail running calendar. The Chianti Ultra Trail by UTMB is part of the UTMB World Seriesโ€”the same circuit that culminates in the legendary Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blancโ€”and brings thousands of runners from every corner of the globe to Tuscany.

The event attracts over 5,000 participants representing more than 80 nations, cementing Radda in Chianti as a premier destination for trail running enthusiasts. It also serves as a spectacular showcase for the Sienese Chianti region, world-renowned for its vineyards, castles, and medieval villages.

Five distances for every type of athlete

The program offers races for all levels, from ultra-distance professionals to enthusiasts looking to soak up the event's unique atmosphere:

  • Ultra Trail Chianti Castles (UTCC): approx. 120 km with over 5,200 meters of elevation gain, the flagship race that awards points for access to the UTMB in Chamonix;
  • Chianti Ultra Trail: approx. 73 km with 3,000 meters of elevation gain;
  • Chianti Marathon Trail: approx. 46 km with 1,650 meters of elevation gain;
  • Chianti Half Trail: approx. 20 km with 920 meters of elevation gain;
  • Chianti Wine Run: 10 km with 400 meters of elevation gain, the most accessible and festive distance.

A route through vineyards and castles

The courses wind along the white gravel roads, trails, and ridges of the Chianti Classico, passing through vineyards, olive groves, forests, and ancient hamlets. It is both a sporting challenge and a deeply scenic experience: running here means immersing yourself in one of Tuscany's most iconic landscapes, where the physical exertion of the race blends with the beauty of the panorama.

Starts and finishes are centered in Radda in Chianti, where the UTMB Village hosts athletes, supporters, technical sponsors, and the public, featuring stands, entertainment, and side events throughout the duration of the festival.

World-class champions

The Chianti Ultra Trail regularly attracts some of the best international athletes in the sport, with highly prestigious start lists for the longer distances. The competition, combined with the unique setting of the Chianti region, makes it an unmissable event for both competitors and spectators alike.

Sport, territory, and sustainability

Beyond the races, the event focuses on promoting the local area and maintaining a commitment to sustainability, in line with the values of the UTMB circuit. The Chianti Ultra Trail thus serves as a major tourism driver for Radda in Chianti and the entire Sienese Chianti area, successfully bridging sporting excellence with the discovery of traditional Tuscan products and culture.
