The village of Sasso di Roccarainola turns red: two days of farm-to-table cherries, local Nola flavors, and live music.
In the heart of the Nola area, about forty kilometers from Naples, the small village of Sasso, part of the Municipality of Roccarainola (Naples province, Campania), dedicates an entire June weekend each year to the fruit that best defines this land: the cherry. The Cherry Festival is an authentic village fair, born from the desire of local youth to promote the cherry orchards covering the hills around the Nola plain and to keep alive a rural tradition passed down through generations. In 2026, the event reached its sixteenth edition, cementing its place as one of the most beloved appointments in the local summer calendar.
The heart of the event is the Cherry and Local Products Market, where local producers bring their freshly picked harvest, allowing visitors to buy and taste directly from the growers. Surrounding the market are food stalls offering genuine, farm-to-table, and organic specialties, both sweet and savory. Highlights of the weekend include:
A special role is played by the Ceraselle, the local women who preserve and serve the recipes of the past: they are the ones who truly tell the story of what the cherry season means here. On Sunday, the stalls remain open for lunch, making the festival a perfect day trip.
Evenings take place at the Sasso Amphitheatre in Piazza Barbarino, which transforms into an open-air stage for two nights. The musical program focuses on traditional Campanian folk music and Neapolitan songs, featuring live bands that engage audiences of all ages. Over the years, the stage has hosted tammurriata groups, small folk orchestras, and bands dedicated to Neapolitan music, designed to keep families dancing late into the night. The atmosphere is convivial, with the square bustling and the scent of cherries filling the air.
The Cherry Festival is organized by the Giovani di Sasso group together with the Secular Order, with the patronage of the Municipality of Roccarainola and the collaboration of the association L'Unione che genera l'amore. This is no staged event: it is the local volunteers who set up the stalls, cook, and welcome visitors. This is complemented by a charitable dimension, summarized by the organizers' motto — 'help us to help' — which links the cherry, a fruit associated with love, to mutual support within the community.
The hills around Roccarainola have always been land for cherry orchards: cherry cultivation is one of the historic agricultural vocations of the Nola and Vesuvius area, where local varieties ripen between late May and mid-June. Bringing the cherry to the town square means celebrating a landscape, a work calendar, and an identity: visitors from outside the region quickly understand why this fruit is considered a symbol of fertility and abundance in Campania.
The event usually falls on the second weekend of June, when the harvest is at its peak. The festival area opens in the afternoon and continues until late at night, with musical performances concentrated after dinner. Admission is free: you only pay for what you consume, at typical village fair prices. It is a family-friendly event, with children playing freely in the square, and a great opportunity to combine a visit to the village of Sasso with a walk through the surrounding green hills.
The village of Sasso, a district of Roccarainola in the province of Naples, hosted the sixteenth edition of the Cherry Festival on June 13 and 14, 2026. The heart of the event remained the Piazza Barbarino Amphitheatre, with the festival area buzzing from the afternoon until late at night.
As always, the stars were the local cherries: the Cherry and Local Products Market offered freshly picked fruit, artisanal sweets, and jams, while food stalls served genuine, farm-to-table, and organic specialties, both sweet and savory. On Sunday, the stalls opened for lunch, extending the festivities throughout the day.
The evenings concluded with live music: on Saturday, June 13, the appointment was with Soleluna starting at 9:00 PM, while on Sunday, June 14, the grand finale was entrusted to the show Naples under the stars. Entry to the area was free for everyone.
The edition was organized by the Secular Order and the 'Giovani di Sasso' group, with the patronage of the Municipality of Roccarainola.
Approximate festival hours: from 6:00 PM until late at night (also open for lunch on Sunday). The full program and updates are published on the official Facebook page of the event.
