A dance concert featuring Occitan music and dance from the Upper Susa Valley
The Parenaperde concert is one of the highlights brought to Sauze d'Oulx—a renowned ski resort in the Upper Susa Valley, located in the Province of Turin in the heart of the Piedmontese Alps—by the Chantar l'Uvern festival. The event takes place in the Tourist Office conference hall on Viale Genevris and features a dance concert dedicated to the traditional music and dances of the Occitan valleys.
Chantar l'Uvern, which means "singing the winter" in Occitan, is a traveling winter festival that runs from Candlemas until May 1st. The event involves about thirty municipalities across the Susa, Chisone, Germanasca, and Sangone valleys, bringing the alpine winter to life with concerts, lectures, theatrical performances, film screenings, and anthropological meetings. Its goal is to promote the Occitan, Franco-Provençal, and French languages and cultures, which are essential parts of the identity of Piedmontese mountain communities, alongside the region's biodiversity.
The Parenaperde group, whose name means "nothing to lose" in the local patois, is a territorial ensemble highly regarded for its dedicated research and revival of the Susa Valley's musical heritage. The group performs music and dances from the Upper Valley, blending voices, violin, mandolin, accordion, clarinets, musette, and piffero in a transalpine repertoire designed to get the audience dancing.
Beyond the music, the event offers a moment of conviviality with a service of gofri and drinks—the typical waffles cooked between red-hot irons that belong to the gastronomic tradition of the Occitan valleys. This free initiative, open to everyone, is a perfect opportunity for both tourists and residents to discover the authentic soul of the mountains in the municipality of Sauze d'Oulx and the entire Cottian Alps area.
The festival is promoted by the Cottian Alps Protected Areas and the Chambra d'Oc Association, with the patronage and support of the Piedmont Region, the Metropolitan City of Turin, and the local mountain unions.
