Float parades and masked groups across two Nebrodi villages
The Cesarò and San Teodoro Carnival is a popular event that unites two small mountain towns in the province of Messina, nestled in the heart of the Nebrodi Park. Cesarò and San Teodoro, neighboring towns bound by a long shared history, organize their carnival together by splitting the festive days: the parades are held first in Cesarò and then move to San Teodoro, involving both communities in one big, widespread celebration.
The heart of the event lies in the parades of allegorical floats and masked groups that wind through the streets of the two villages, turning them into an open-air theater of color, music, and satire. In Cesarò, the procession starts from Via Mercato and reaches the municipal villa, while in San Teodoro, the festivities center around the town and the Church of Maria Santissima Annunziata. Every year, the preparation of the floats and themed groups involves the entire town: families, associations, and the Pro Loco work for weeks to create the papier-mâché structures and costumes.
At the end of the parades, cash prizes are awarded to the most beautiful float and masked group, a recognition that celebrates the participants' dedication and creativity. There is no shortage of tastings of traditional carnival sweets, accompanied by music and dancing that enliven the evenings. It is an authentic, family-friendly festival, far from the major tourist crowds, which tells the story of the identity of a mountain territory and the desire of these Nebrodi communities to come together.
For those visiting inland Sicily, the Cesarò and San Teodoro Carnival is an opportunity to discover two authentic villages in the Nebrodi mountains, featuring mountain landscapes, local gastronomy, and a genuine carnival tradition. An event that combines the fun of parades with the warm hospitality of small Sicilian towns.
The 2026 edition was held on Saturday, February 21, and Sunday, February 22, with parades starting at 4:30 PM. The days followed the traditional formula that unites the two municipalities: after the children's masked procession, the allegorical float parades and masked groups traveled through the streets of the villages, with the Cesarò route starting from Via Mercato and ending at the municipal villa.
At the end, cash prizes were awarded to the most beautiful float and group. The evenings were accompanied by tastings of traditional carnival sweets, music, and dancing for all ages.
