About Cente, Cunti e Canti

Cente, Cunti e Canti brings an evening dedicated to the traditional stories, tales, and songs of the Vallo di Diano to the Casa Canonica on Via Sant'Antonio in San Rufo. Promoted by the Associazione Tempa in Festa APS in collaboration with the Santa Maria Maggiore Parish, this workshop is a space open to the community where voices, memories, and melodies become living material to be shared and passed down. It is an intimate gathering where different generations come together around the village's collective memory and cultural identity.

A memory workshop in the heart of San Rufo

Cente, Cunti e Canti is an open community workshop held at the Casa Canonica on Via Sant'Antonio in San Rufo, a small town in the Vallo di Diano area of the province of Salerno, Campania. The event is dedicated to local traditional stories, tales, and songs: it is not a performance with a stage and an audience, but a gathering where participants bring their own voices, memories, and melodies learned within their families.

The initiative was created with the explicit goal of valuing collective memory through a participatory journey that weaves together popular storytelling, music, and cultural identity. The workshop serves as a space open to the village, where voices, memories, and melodies become living material to be shared and preserved: a collection effort more akin to a living archive than an entertainment show.

The three words in the title

The name of the initiative lists three words from the local lexicon, each opening a window onto a piece of the intangible heritage of the Vallo di Diano.

  • Cente — the cente, also known as cinti, are artistically decorated wax compositions carried in procession: in San Rufo, they are primarily paraded during the Madonna della Tempa festival in September and remain one of the village's most recognizable emblems.
  • Cunti — the cunti are oral tales, stories passed down by word of mouth from generation to generation, often linked to field work, devotion, or the minor chronicles of the village.
  • Canti — the folk, devotional, and work songs that accompanied agricultural seasons and processions, which survive primarily in the memories of the elderly.

Who promotes the gathering

The event is organized by the Associazione Tempa in Festa APS in collaboration with the Santa Maria Maggiore Parish, the mother church of San Rufo. The same association also organizes Tempa in Festa, the festival that enlivens the village in August with music, local flavors, and tradition, which reached its eleventh edition in 2026 alongside the ninth Angelo Muraro Memorial. Cente, Cunti e Canti represents its more intimate, documentary-focused side: not a party, but work on the roots that the party celebrates.

The Casa Canonica, a significant venue

The choice of the Casa Canonica on Via Sant'Antonio as the venue is no coincidence: it strengthens the bond with the history of the territory and offers an intimate, authentic context in which to rediscover ancient traditions. Its domestic scale is consistent with the tone of the initiative, which is based on close listening rather than amplification.

San Rufo, between Vallo di Diano and the Alburni

San Rufo is nestled between the Spina dell'Ausino and the Cucuzzo delle Puglie, in a strategic position at the Passo della Sentinella, the mountain pass connecting the Vallo di Diano to the Valle del Calore Salernitano. Vineyards and olive groves overlook the Tanagro plain, and the village is a convenient base for exploring the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. In addition to the mother church of Santa Maria Maggiore, also known as the Assunta, the religious heritage includes the churches of Sant'Antonio and San Michele Arcangelo, and the chapel of the Madonna della Tempa.

The festival calendar clearly shows how alive tradition still is in this corner of the province of Salerno: the Madonna della Tempa festival in September with the procession of wax cente, the celebrations for the patron saint San Rufo on August 27th, the event with Sant'Antonio at Fontana Vaglio on the first Sunday of August, and the chestnut festival in autumn.

A multi-session journey

Cente, Cunti e Canti was not designed as an isolated event: the source announcing its date presents it as one of the appointments in a broader cultural enhancement path that aims to safeguard and renew the intangible heritage of the territory by transforming memory into a shared experience. It is a format designed to be repeated, because the collection of stories and songs only makes sense if it continues over time.

Who it is for

The meeting is open to everyone and explicitly aims to involve different generations, fostering a dialogue that unites the past and present through the evocative power of folk tales and songs. Visitors from outside will find a rare opportunity to connect with the oral culture of the Vallo di Diano without tourist filters; those who live in San Rufo will find a space where their family memory regains public value.

  • Recommended to combine with a visit to: the mother church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the chapel of the Madonna della Tempa, and the trails of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park.
  • In September, it is worth returning to San Rufo to see the wax cente carried in procession.
