About San Vittore Festival

Every year in mid-May, Otricoli, a small village in the province of Terni overlooking the Tiber valley, celebrates its patron saints Vittore and Fulgenzio. The feast combines the solemn religious celebration in the collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta, the procession with the relics through the streets of the historic centre, and a rich popular programme with music, food stalls, and the Taverna dell'Angelo open every evening. An event that has united the entire Otricoli community around its identity for generations.

The patronal feast of Otricoli

The Festeggiamenti in Onore dei Santi Vittore e Fulgenzio are the most heartfelt moment of the year for Otricoli, a medieval village in the province of Terni in Umbria, built on the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Ocriculum. The celebration focuses around May 14th, the day the community pays homage to its patrons with a week of religious and civil events.

Saint Vittore and Bishop Fulgenzio

According to tradition, Saint Vittore was a young man from Otricoli enlisted in the Roman army and stationed in Damascus, where he was martyred on May 14th, 168 AD, for refusing to renounce his Christian faith during the persecutions. His remains were found centuries later by Bishop Fulgenzio near ancient Ocriculum, giving rise to an abbey dedicated to the saint. Hence the deep bond between the village and its two protectors.

The celebration and procession

The religious heart of the feast is the solemn mass in the collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta, attended by civil authorities, confraternities, and representatives of neighbouring municipalities. Afterwards, the relics of Saint Vittore are carried in a procession through the village streets, accompanied by the band, culminating in a final blessing on the churchyard.

Popular traditions and Taverna dell'Angelo

Alongside the devotional aspect, the festivities liven up the historic centre with music, re-enactments of local historical figures and characters, shows, and stalls. The meeting point is the Taverna dell'Angelo, open every evening from 7:30 PM, serving dishes from traditional Otricoli and Umbrian cuisine. It's an opportunity to discover an authentic village, far from the main tourist routes, and experience a local festival still deeply connected to its roots.

San Vittore Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the festivities took place from May 10th to 17th, culminating on May 14th, the day of the patron saints' religious feast. The solemn mass in the collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta was presided over by the diocesan administrator Don Matteo Antonelli, followed by the procession with the relics through the village streets. The music was performed by the Marzio Erculei choir.

The 2026 festivities were held from May 10th to 17th, with the main day on May 14th. The solemn mass in the collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta was presided over by the diocesan administrator Don Matteo Antonelli, concelebrated by the parish priest and a vicar, with the participation of the mayor of Otricoli, representatives of neighbouring municipalities, and several confraternities. The music was performed by the Marzio Erculei choir.

After the celebration, the procession with the relics of Saint Vittore crossed the village streets accompanied by the band, concluding with a blessing on the churchyard. During the ceremony, Don Matteo Antonelli received the "San Vittore d'oro" award for his contributions to the study of local history. Throughout the week, the historic centre was enlivened by popular traditions and the Taverna dell'Angelo, open every evening from 7:30 PM.
