Gubbio remembers the proclamation of its patron saint with processions, pilgrimages, and the Canonization Concert
Saint Ubaldo Baldassini, Bishop of Gubbio who died in 1160, was proclaimed a saint by Pope Celestine III on March 5, 1192. Since then, the Umbrian city, in the province of Perugia, has revered him as its patron and made him the focal point of its entire community life, from the Feast of the Ceri in May to the spring celebrations commemorating his canonization.
The Canonization Celebrations are spread over several days, between the beginning and the first week of March. They open with the pilgrimage from the Cathedral to the Basilica of Saint Ubaldo on Mount Ingino, where the incorrupt relics of the saint are kept, and continue with the solemn Holy Mass presided over by the Bishop and the investiture of the Capodieci of the Cero of Saint Ubaldo, the first act of the long journey towards the Feast of the Ceri.
The cultural highlight is the Canonization Concert, which in 2026 will reach its seventeenth edition, hosted at the "Luca Ronconi" Municipal Theater. During the evening, the "Civis, Pater ac Pontifex Ubalde" award is presented, recognizing personalities who honor the city. The program is completed by conferences from the Ubaldiani Study Center, which delve into the historical and devotional figure of Saint Ubaldo.
The 2026 edition celebrated the 834th anniversary of the canonization of Saint Ubaldo. On Sunday, March 1, the pilgrimage from the Cathedral to the Basilica on Mount Ingino took place, with Holy Mass presided over by Bishop Mons. Luciano Paolucci Bedini and the investiture of the Capodieci of the Cero of Saint Ubaldo, Gabriele Fofi, followed by the traditional lunch under the Arches of the Palazzo dei Consoli. On Wednesday, March 4, the Ubaldiani Study Center presented a conference on the saint's relics; on Thursday, March 5, the anniversary day, a procession and solemn Mass. On Friday, March 6, at the "Luca Ronconi" Theater, the seventeenth edition of the Canonization Concert featured Verdi's La Traviata and the presentation of the "Civis, Pater ac Pontifex Ubalde" award to researcher Paolo Salciarini.
Gubbio can be reached by car from the SS298 (Gubbio-Mocaiana exit) or the E45; by train to Fossato di Vico-Gubbio or Perugia, then by bus. The Basilica of Saint Ubaldo on Mount Ingino is served by the Colle Eletto cable car.
Religious celebrations are free to attend. For the Canonization Concert, admission is free with reservation at the IAT tourist office in Via della Repubblica (tel. +39 075 9220693).
