The Middle Ages for Everyone
The Medieval Ages Festival is Italy's premier event dedicated to the dissemination of medieval history. Founded in 2015, it brings about a hundred protagonists – including medievalists, art historians, writers, and philosophers – to Gubbio, in the heart of Umbria and the province of Perugia, every year at the end of September. The festival is directed by journalist Federico Fioravanti.
A Five-Day Program
The idea is to narrate the thousand years from the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the discovery of America, using language accessible to all. The festival intertwines several aspects:
- Author Evenings, featuring well-known cultural and entertainment figures;
- The Medieval Book Fair, a showcase for specialized publishing;
- Scriptoria, dedicated to the art of miniature and calligraphy;
- History to Browse and Medievalisms, focusing on the Middle Ages in contemporary culture;
- The Re-enactors' University, exhibitions, markets, shows, and educational activities.
A City as a Stage
Gubbio, with its grey stone profile, hanging squares, and the Palazzo dei Consoli, is the ideal setting for a festival that speaks of the Middle Ages. The various sections animate the historic center, transforming it into a large open-air cultural laboratory, attracting scholars, enthusiasts, and the curious from all over Italy.
Medieval Ages Festival — edition 2026
The XII edition of the Medieval Ages Festival, scheduled in Gubbio from September 23 to 27, 2026, is titled 'The Time of Francis. Homo homini lupus'. It's a journey to the dawn of the thirteenth century to celebrate Francis of Assisi eight hundred years after his death, exploring his radical choice to live according to the Gospel, his fraternal love for Creation, and his complex relationship with the Church and the Franciscan Order. The novelty for 2026 is the new venue: the San Francesco Complex, in Piazza Quaranta Martiri, which strengthens the link between the edition's theme and the historical sites of the Franciscan experience.

The festival is divided into five days, from September 23 to 27, 2026, with a packed schedule of events including conferences, exhibitions, and experiential activities. The main confirmed sections are:
- Conferences and lectures with about a hundred Italian and European medievalists, art historians, writers, and philosophers;
- Author Evenings, evening encounters with well-known cultural and entertainment figures;
- The Medieval Book Fair, dedicated to specialized publishing;
- Scriptoria, workshops on the art of miniature and calligraphy;
- History to Browse, Medievalisms, and The Re-enactors' University;
- Exhibitions, themed markets, shows, and educational activities for schools.

Getting Here
Gubbio does not have a train station: it can be reached by car from the E45 (Mocaiana or Gubbio exit) or by bus from Perugia and Fossato di Vico. Paid and free parking is available near Piazza Quaranta Martiri, from which the cable car to Monte Ingino departs.
