Masked parades, music, and fun in the heart of the Norman town
In the heart of the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, where the Arab-Norman Cathedral overlooks the rooftops of the historic center, the Cefalù Carnival turns the village into an open-air stage. For a few days in February, the streets of this town in the province of Palermo fill with masks, confetti, and music, in a popular festival that brings together local associations, families, and the many visitors drawn to one of the most beloved spots on the Madonie coast.
The heart of the festivities is the masked parade that travels along Via Roma to reach the scenic Piazza Duomo, at the foot of the famous Cathedral. Local associations participate with their masked groups, while in the evening, the square comes alive with musical entertainment and live performances, creating a festive atmosphere that unites residents and tourists alike.
Among the most anticipated events is the children's competition "Coriandolo d'Oro - Memorial Angelo Arduino", hosted at the Teatro Artigianelli. It is a morning dedicated to the little ones, featuring costume awards and performances that keep a tradition dear to the Cefalù community alive.
The program also includes festive days at the Villa Comunale, with bouncy castles, mascots, music, popcorn, and cotton candy designed for children. Organized with the support of the Municipality and local associations, the event focuses on values of respect, inclusion, and community participation, making the Carnival a moment of gathering for the entire town.
Experiencing Carnival in Cefalù means discovering the village in its most festive guise: the medieval alleys, the promenade, and the beach provide the backdrop for an event that, while remaining intimate and village-scale, offers genuine and evocative atmospheres. An ideal stop for those visiting Sicily in winter who wish to savor the popular traditions of the Madonie region.
The 2026 edition took place on February 20 and 21, following a postponement from the original dates of February 15 and 17 due to adverse weather forecasts that would not have guaranteed the safe conduct of activities. The days of February 14 and 19 served as a preview at the Villa Comunale, with the "Carnival Party" organized by the association Madagascar - L'isola dei monelli, featuring bouncy castles, mascots, music, popcorn, and cotton candy.
Mayor Daniele Tumminello emphasized how the event promotes wholesome fun and values of respect and inclusion, with broad participation from the Cefalù community.
