The historic residences of Friuli Venezia Giulia open their doors
Friuli Venezia Giulia is a land of castles: fortified dwellings, noble residences, and ancient strongholds dot the hills and plains, bearing witness to centuries of border history. Castelli Aperti FVG is the event that allows you to cross the thresholds of these extraordinary architectures, many of which are still inhabited by the descendant families of the historic owners and are normally not open to visitors.
The initiative is organized by the Consortium for the Safeguarding of Historic Castles of Friuli Venezia Giulia, active for over fifty years in the protection and enhancement of the region's castle heritage. Two annual events, in spring and autumn, mark the coordinated opening of dozens of residences in the four provinces.
Among the open residences, the Castle of Colloredo di Monte Albano stands out, one of the most evocative manors in Friuli, severely damaged by the 1976 earthquake and the subject of a long restoration. The castle is famous for its connection with the writer Ippolito Nievo, who set pages of his works here and spent part of his youth. Guided tours allow you to discover its history, architecture, and the surrounding landscape.
During the opening days, each castle offers hourly guided tours, often accompanied by historical re-enactments, concerts, craft exhibitions, and workshops for children. A unique opportunity to get to know the historical and landscape heritage of the territory up close, with the support of the Municipalities involved and the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The Spring 2026 edition takes place on Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29, with 19 castles and historic residences open to the public in the four provinces of the region. Visits are available with hourly departures on both days; some sites are only open on Sundays.
The Castle of Colloredo di Monte Albano is among the open residences, with guided tours dedicated to the history of the manor and its connection with Ippolito Nievo.
Guided tours of the participating castles depart hourly on Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29. Each residence offers its own schedule of visits and collateral events, which may include historical re-enactments, concerts, craft exhibitions, and workshops for children.
The detailed program and opening hours for each castle, including Colloredo di Monte Albano, will be published on the official website of the Consorzio Castelli FVG in the weeks preceding the event.
Colloredo di Monte Albano is located in the hills north of Udine (about 20 km), reachable by car from the SS13 Pontebbana. Each participating castle has its own location: consult the map on the Consortium's website.
