The festival celebrating the signature pastry of Favignana, in the Egadi Islands
The Cassatelle Festival is one of the most cherished events in the spring calendar of Favignana, the largest of the Egadi Islands in the province of Trapani. Every year, between late April and early May, Piazza Matrice transforms into a vibrant meeting point where residents and visitors gather to enjoy one of the most iconic sweets of the western Sicilian tradition.
Cassatelle, known in the local dialect as cassateddri, are small fried sweet ravioli made with a fragrant dough of lard, cinnamon, and lemon zest. Their heart is a rich filling of fresh sheep's milk ricotta, embellished with chocolate chips or candied fruit. Once fried and served warm, they are dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon, releasing the aroma that has always accompanied family celebrations in the Trapani region. During the festival, you can watch them being prepared on the spot and taste them in their most authentic version.
The event takes place in the afternoon, starting at 3:00 PM, and continues until evening. Alongside the tasting of cassatelle and other local products, the program features live music, entertainment, folk performances, and activities organized by the youth of the parish. The square fills with group dances, joy, and that authentic village atmosphere that makes the event a gathering point for the entire island community.
The festival is organized by the Oratorio Canossa Association and the Parish of Favignana, with the patronage of the Municipality of Favignana - Egadi Islands. It is a celebration entirely built by island volunteers: the inhabitants themselves serve the community, preparing the pastries and enlivening the square. For this reason, the Cassatelle Festival retains an authentic and popular character, far from commercial logic, and represents one of the most genuine moments to discover the soul of Favignana.
Nestled in the Egadi Islands Nature Reserve, off the coast of Trapani, Favignana is famous for its crystal-clear sea, ancient tuna fisheries, and landscapes shaped by tuff quarries. The festival falls during the time when the island awakens after winter and welcomes the first visitors of the season: enjoying a warm cassatella in Piazza Matrice thus becomes a way to immerse yourself in the culture and flavors of this corner of Sicily.
