Every year in July, Casoria celebrates the Bread Festival, an event that intertwines devotion to the patron saint San Benedetto Abate with the city's love for the art of baking. The event takes place around the Sanctuary of San Benedetto Abate, in the heart of one of the oldest districts of this populous town in the province of Naples, Campania.

The tradition of blessed bread

The festival is rooted in an ancient Casoria custom: on the feast day of Saint Benedict, small blessed loaves are distributed to the faithful. This tradition recalls the legend of the saint, who, according to lore, was saved by a raven that warned him of a poisoning attempt. This act of protection created a symbolic bond between Saint Benedict, bread, and the community, which still gathers around the sanctuary today to renew the ritual.

A program of tastings and performances

The heart of the festival is dedicated to bread in all its forms. Along the streets of the center, local bakeries set up stalls, while master bakers offer live demonstrations of traditional baking, from kneading the dough to wood-fired oven cooking. There is no shortage of free tastings of bread, taralli, stuffed sandwiches, and rustic pizzas, accompanied by local products.
