A day of flavors, traditions, and medieval charm in the Agrò Valley
Casalvecchio: Taste and Culture is the event that transforms Piazza Municipio and the narrow streets of Casalvecchio Siculo for a day. This small town in the province of Messina is perched at an altitude of approximately 370 meters in the Peloritani Mountains, just a few kilometers from the Ionian coast. The event was created to showcase the Agrò Valley and its roots, weaving together the pleasure of good food with the rediscovery of the village's historical and scenic heritage.
The festivities kick off in the morning around 10:00 AM, when the square becomes the hub for a journey combining gastronomy, culture, and outdoor activities. Highlights include:
The delicious heart of the event is the street food, featuring a rich assortment of typical Messina specialties: pasta alla norma, the traditional cuzzola, homemade products, grilled meats like braciole and sausage, porchetta sandwiches, stuffed puccia, local desserts, and drinks. It is a showcase of the agro-pastoral heritage of Casalvecchio, a land of extra virgin olive oil, honey, and crusty durum wheat bread.
Visiting Casalvecchio Siculo also means discovering one of the treasures of the Agrò Valley: the famous Church of Saints Peter and Paul of Agrò, a remarkable example of the fusion between Arab, Byzantine, and Norman styles. The event, promoted within the municipality of Casalvecchio Siculo in Sicily, is an opportunity to experience the village in a festive atmosphere, amidst folk traditions, conviviality, and warm hospitality.
On Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 10:00 AM, Piazza Municipio was the heart of the 2026 edition of Casalvecchio: Taste and Culture. The day combined the discovery of the Agrò Valley territory with the pleasure of dining: guided tours through the alleys of the historic center, scenic bicycle tours, and exhibitions along the route.
Visitors were accompanied throughout the day by live concerts, performances, and folk dances, as well as a children's area equipped with entertainers. The star of the show was the street food featuring Messina specialties: pasta alla norma, cuzzola, homemade products, grilled meats, porchetta sandwiches, stuffed puccia, and local sweets.
Casalvecchio Siculo can be reached by car via the A18 Messina-Catania motorway, taking the Roccalumera/Sant'Alessio Siculo exit and following the road that climbs up the Agrò Valley. The nearest train station is Santa Teresa di Riva, on the Ionian line.
The event takes place in Piazza Municipio and the historic center, starting at 10:00 AM. We recommend wearing comfortable footwear for the guided tours through the alleys.
