Occimiano's 'green' Carnival, featuring upcycled carts and a masked parade
The Cart Carnival is the annual Carnival celebration in Occimiano, a village nestled in the Monferrato hills in the province of Alessandria, in the heart of Piedmont. Originally a local town event, this carnival has quickly won over families from across the region thanks to a simple, original concept that sets it apart from traditional allegorical float parades.
Sustainability is the core theme of the event. Participants are encouraged to build their own carts using exclusively recycled materials: old carts, strollers, tricycles, or any other base are transformed into authentic works of art on wheels. It is an invitation to creativity that primarily engages children and their families, adding an educational value to the event by combining fun with a focus on recycling.
The highlight of the day is the masked parade that marches through the streets of Occimiano. Each edition features a different theme, while still allowing participants full creative freedom. The parade starts at the Oratory and winds through the town center, filled with costumes, colors, and joy, before returning to the starting point for the awards ceremony and a final snack.
At the end of the parade, special awards are given to celebrate the effort and creativity of the participants: typically, prizes are awarded for the most original cart, the best costume, and the most creative group. The festivities conclude with a snack at the Oratory, a convivial moment that brings together both young and old.
The Cart Carnival is organized by the Municipality of Occimiano in collaboration with the Pro Loco, the Oratory, and the local youth committee, following the best traditions of Piedmontese community festivals. Admission is free and the event is open to everyone, offering a perfect opportunity to experience the hospitality of a small Monferrato village during the Carnival season.
The second edition of the Cart Carnival in Occimiano was held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, from 2:15 PM to 6:30 PM, with the parade starting at 2:15 PM from the Oratory on Via Roma.
The theme of the edition was 'Historical Eras', while still allowing participants ample creative freedom. True to the 'green' spirit of the event, every cart was built using recycled materials, transforming strollers, tricycles, and other supports into works of art on wheels. The festival, open to all and free of charge, concluded with an awards ceremony and a snack at the Oratory.
Free event open to everyone, organized by the Municipality of Occimiano with the Pro Loco, the Oratory, and the 2008 youth committee.
The parade starts and ends at the Maria Ausiliatrice Oratory in Occimiano, on Via Roma, and travels through the town center (postal code 15040), in the province of Alessandria.
By car: Occimiano is located in the Casale Monferrato area, accessible via the A26 motorway (Casale Sud or Alessandria Ovest exits) and the provincial roads of Monferrato. By train: the most convenient station is Casale Monferrato, just a few kilometers away.
Participation and admission are free. For information: Municipality of Occimiano, tel. +39 0142 809131, or Vincenzo at +39 339 1750886.
An event suitable for families with children. Those wishing to participate with their own cart can prepare it in advance using recycled materials, following the theme of the current edition.
