The carnival on the shores of Lake Albano in Castel Gandolfo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Carnevalago is the carnival festival that the Municipality of Castel Gandolfo brings every year to the shores of Lake Albano, in the heart of the Castelli Romani, near Rome. The name itself, a blend of «Carnevale» (Carnival) and «lago» (lake), captures the essence of the event: two days of joy, colors, and costumes animating the lakeside and the famous Spiaggia del Lago in Castel Gandolfo, set against one of the most beloved natural backdrops in Lazio.
The lakeside promenade turns into a grand open-air stage. The heart of the event lies in the costume parades along Via Spiaggia del Lago, accompanied by stilt walkers, jugglers, and street performers who engage visitors of all ages. There is no shortage of magic shows, giant soap bubbles, and plenty of activities dedicated to the little ones.
Alongside the performances, the parking area adjacent to the lake tunnel hosts an artisan market featuring creations from local exhibitors and crafters, as well as a spacious street food area, where you can savor carnival specialties and treats. It is the perfect opportunity to combine the fun of the carnival with a culinary stroll by the lake.
Castel Gandolfo, famous as the summer residence of the Popes, overlooks the stunning Lake Albano, a volcanic basin nestled among the woods of the Alban Hills. Experiencing the carnival on the lakeside means discovering one of the most poetic corners of the Castelli Romani area, just a few kilometers from Rome, in a setting that makes every edition of Carnevalago a unique experience compared to a traditional town-square carnival.
Promoted and organized by the Municipality of Castel Gandolfo, Carnevalago is an event designed for families and the entire community, with free admission. The festival highlights the lakeside as a place for gathering and celebration, cementing its reputation as one of the most distinctive carnival events in the Castelli Romani and the Lazio region.
For the 2026 edition, Carnevalago is announced on the lakeside of Castel Gandolfo, on the shores of Lake Albano, featuring floats and costume parades, family entertainment, a market, and street food. The dates indicated for the carnival on the lakeside are the weekends of February 7-8 and 14-15, 2026. Official confirmation and the detailed program are provided by the Municipality of Castel Gandolfo.
By car: Castel Gandolfo can be reached from Rome via the Via Appia or the A1 motorway (exit Monte Porzio Catone/San Cesareo), then follow the signs for the lake. The lakeside is located in the lower part of the town, on the shores of Lake Albano.
By train: Castel Gandolfo station is on the Rome-Albano Laziale line, connected to Roma Termini station.
Admission to the event is free. Activities take place outdoors along Via Spiaggia del Lago and on the shores of Lake Albano.
The event is family-friendly. We recommend comfortable clothing and, for those who want to get into the spirit of the festival, a carnival costume.
