The Preone carnival between masks and the satirical Test di Carnevâl
In Preone, a tiny municipality nestled in the mountains of Carnia, carnival has its own name: Carnevâl dai Becs. It's one of those village festivals where the whole community comes together to laugh, dress up, and poke fun at each other, following a tradition that blends joy and popular satire.
The day begins in the afternoon in front of the historic Palazzo Lupieri, from where the lively parade of masks starts through the village streets. At the end of the procession, the party continues indoors, in the Sala del Capitano, with a program designed for all ages.
The most anticipated moment is the reading of the Test di Carnevâl — Carnival's Testament, a satirical text in the Friulian language that, with irony, reveals secrets, episodes, and little mischiefs about the fellow villagers. It's a typical ritual of Friulian carnivals, where the community laughs at itself: the "testament" that Carnival leaves before dying becomes a pretext for a humorous chronicle of the past year in the village.
The flavors of tradition warm up the afternoon: the distribution of crostoli and zabaglione, indispensable carnival sweets in Friuli. For the little ones, there's the face painting corner, while music selected by Aristide accompanies the entire festival. Organized with the Municipality of Preone, the Carnevâl dai Becs is a precious example of how even the smallest villages can preserve their traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Carnevâl dai Becs is scheduled for Sunday, February 15 in Preone, starting at 3:00 PM. After meeting in front of Palazzo Lupieri, the mask parade will go through the village streets; the party will then continue indoors with the reading of the Test di Carnevâl and entertainment for all ages.
