Carneval Circus is a Carnival festival that brings contemporary circus, music, and creative workshops to the heart of Ostia, the seaside district of the City of Rome administered by Municipio X, in the Lazio region. This is not your typical float parade; it is a widespread celebration built together with local residents, occupying two iconic spots—Piazza Anco Marzio and Parco Willy Ferrero—and connecting them with an artistic, intercultural parade that travels along the pedestrian seafront.

Organizers

The event is conceived and produced by Zip_Zone Aps, a Roman association active in local cultural outreach, with the support and patronage of Municipio X of Rome. The approach is rooted in social theater and street arts: rather than just a show to watch, Carneval Circus is a participatory experience where children, parents, and passersby become part of the performance. It is no coincidence that the event's slogan is «Bring your color to the square!».

What to expect

The program alternates between workshops and performances, with a strong focus on circus and music. Highlights from recent editions include:

• Collective painting workshops, where participants build and color large recycled cardboard animals under the guidance of a set designer;
• Intercultural parades accompanied by brass bands and percussion, featuring stilt-walkers and papier-mâché creatures;
• Circus workshops, aerial dance, and juggling open to beginners;
• Traveling toy library featuring traditional, handcrafted wooden games;
• Animated readings and children's shows;
• Children's costume parade with a final awards ceremony;
• Live music concerts, with a special focus on African and Mediterranean traditions.

A celebration of the neighborhood as a stage

Ostia has a long-standing tradition of Carnival: the parades in Ostia Ponente and Acilia have been staples of the Roman coast for years. Carneval Circus has carved out a unique, complementary space, focusing on the center of the Lido and a more contemporary language of performance and direct participation. The result is a festival that speaks to children, who find a temporary playground here, and to adults, who rediscover the square as a meeting place outside the summer season.

The choice of Piazza Anco Marzio is no accident: it is the living room of Ostia, the point where the city meets the sea, just steps from the pier and the Lido Centro station. Parco Willy Ferrero, located nearby, provides the green space needed for circus activities and the costume awards.

When it takes place

Like all Carnival events, the dates follow the movable Lenten calendar: the festival falls between late February and early March, typically spanning two days, usually a Saturday and Shrove Tuesday. Participation has always been completely free.
